Hello families! We had an awesome week leading up to the break! All of our spirit days were a blast!  We had so much fun with our sock exchange! Thank you to all the families that sent in socks. The students randomly picked a classmate, then picked out a pair of socks they thought they would like, made a card and then exchanged gifts!  On "Rock Your Socks" day we had fun collecting data about the colour of everyone's socks and graphing this data in a bar graph.  We also graphed our earnings from the Calgary Humane Society fundraiser which was a bit of a challenge because we had to graph up to 75 for quarters! Our graph's scale had to increase by 10s which was a big challenge for our grade 1 students but we just did our best!  This week we learned a silly Shel Silverstein poem called Snowball and students drew a picture to represent the poem.  We were busy making some really cool ornaments and making Christmas cards! Hello families,  We had a very busy week getting ready for our winter concert and our Calgary Humane Society fundraiser! Students love baking and packaging treats, making posters, and some students were even challenged to learn how to curl the ribbon! On Friday we used our skip counting skills to count up all the money we've raised so far. We've raised $666.85 and are hoping to break our record of $700 from last year! All of this work is connected to our health and wellness curriculum (volunteerism), social studies, science, art, math and literacy! Wow! Math In math we've been continuing to work with number bonds. This week students learned how to determine the missing number in a number bond when given the whole and one of the parts. This is a pre-cursor to subtraction! Hello families! Please check out a few notes before our weekly update!  Full Class Library visit - Wednesday morning Students are invited to exchange books at their own pace, but I'm noticing several students not exchanging books throughout the week. On Wednesday morning we are going to go to the learning commons as a full class for a book exchange. Please remember to send books back on or before Wednesday.  Sock Exchange During the month of December LBS is focusing on the Montessori tenet of Gratitude. The Grade 1/2 ‘s will be holding a Winter Sock Exchange to build community and gratitude within their class. The students will practice their fine motor skills to wrap, writing and artistic skills to create a card and demonstrate gratitude when receiving a ‘fun’ pair of new socks!     We ask that if you are able to, to please send in a new/unworn pair of kids socks with a fun pattern for your child to give to classmate by December 18 th .  They can be Winter/Chri...

Hello Families,  Here's what we did this week!  Math In math this week we has fun building things out of base ten blocks to represent different numbers! Students chose a number and built it as a animal, robot, spaceship, etc.  We also started learning about part-part-whole or composing/decomposing numbers and representing this through number bonds. Students enjoyed using snap cubes and dominos to create number bonds. Grade 2 students chose to challenge themselves with using base ten blocks instead! This learning will bring us into addition and subtraction soon!  We also tested out math groups for the first time on Thursday! One of our stations is practicing our number printing as I know number reversals are a concern for many parents - it will come with time and practice!  We did our December calendar on Friday as well to help us stay organized for the month!
