Hello families!  I'm just sharing a quick update from the week but will keep it short! Thanks to everyone who was able to make it to our assembly on Tuesday! I wanted to share the Stick and Stone read aloud for you to watch at home.  In literacy we have been learning about r-controlled vowels. We looked at the ar and or sound, and began learning that er, ir and ur make the same sound! This can be tricky for students, especially when writing - they are not expected to remember when to use er, ir or ur as this will come with more reading experience.  Here are the words for the week after break:  In social studies this week we began learning about Indigenous groups in Canada and started with the Inuit communities in Canada. We learned a bit about the landscape in northern Canada and stuednts really liked the song in the video we watched so I showed them The Jerry Cans which is a Inuit band!  I can't guarantee that all of their music is appropriate because I've only...

Please make sure your child:  Has comfortable clothing Has long hair tied back  Has runners, bare feet or sticky socks!  We've been working really hard to get ready for our assembly! We've also been working on some writing to accompany this work and it will also be shared for conferences. I'm still keeping that work on the down-low!  Also in literacy, we've been learning about the "bossy r" and have learned the "ar" and "or" sounds.  Here are the words for next week.. there will not be a quiz on these ones!  In math we continued to work on number bonds and began learning about fact families. Hello families,  Here's our weekly update! There are some things I don't want to share too much about because I want to keep it on the down-low for conferences and our upcoming assembly!  The highlight of our week was visiting the Sam Centre! We enjoyed learning about the history of the Calgary Stampede, including the first Pancake Breakfast.        In math, we learned about number bonds and composing/decomposing numbers using number bonds! We played a fun game called "Bonds, Number Bonds" (read in your best James Bond voice). Grade 2 students also learned the stacking strategy for addition.    We've been working with Ms. Adamson's class to learn about understanding others!    We spent the week reviewing digraphs in literacy! And started some writing connected to the work above.  Here are the words for next week: In science we explored light energy and learned about natural and artificial sources of light. In social studies students...

Hello families!  It's been awhile...  Ms. G (and Ms. Kassam who used to teach at LBS) and I had a great time at the Reading For The Love Of It conference in Toronto. A highlight was meeting author, Melanie Watt! Here are some photos!    Here is a recap of the last little while!  On the 18th we had fun celebrating the 100th day of school! Students enjoyed participating in an estimating activity! Ask your child how many of each item were in the jars.      Also in math, we worked on some subitizing skills and learned how to represent addition with pictures! Subitizing with dice is a good start but we want to be able to subitize with tens-frames or random dot assortments.    In literacy, students have been continuing to learn about digraphs. Last week students worked on the wh and ph sounds and this week we learned ng and nk. We also learned how to make an acrostic poem for Pink Shirt Day using the word "kindness."  Words for next week ...
