June 9-13

Hello families,

Here's what we got up to this week!

In social studies, we are wrapping up our learning about the Seven Sacred Teachings. We read the story, "Sometimes I Feel Like a Fox" by Danielle Daniel. Students then got to pick the Sacred Teaching that they connected to most for their own writing. Students used a graphic organizer to plan their writing. This included the character traits of their chosen animal, a time they demonstrated that sacred teaching, and lastly, students used Pebble Go to research one scientific fact about their animal. Students completed a 1st draft after sharing with a peer. They also underlined any words they felt may be spelled incorrectly so we can edit their work together. On Friday, students worked on some Sacred Teaching Art to accompany their writing.

In math, we wrapped up our learning about fractions with a little quiz to see what students know. They did awesome! We did an addition and subtraction check in and refresher. I was hoping to get to shapes this week but we ran out of time! We will be starting our last unit next week!

In science, we've been continuing on with our computer science unit. We watched this video of kids giving their dad instructions on how to make a pb&j sandwich. We learned how important it is to be precise in our instructions. Students then chose a topic and did some "how-to" writing. On Friday we had fun with a "human robot" activity. Students worked in partners where one parter was the robot, and one was the coder. The robot could only follow the instructions, and the coder had to be very precise in their instructions. Students are excited to work with Scratch Jr, Dot & Dash robots and the Ozbots next week!

In wellness we're continuing our learning about healthy eating. We played a game to learn about different food guides in different countries. It worked well on our Smartboard but no so much on the iPads. Students then designed their own healthy plates!

In literacy we talked about the "-le" ending on words. During our small group work, grade 2s learned the "wr" sound. Some grade 2 students designed a character for us named Wrestler Wren.

Here are our words for next week (we're going to continue on with this routine to maintain consistency as we approach the last 9 days of school!)

On Wednesday, we were a bit sad to cancel our walking field trip with our big buddies because of the air quality. Instead, our buddies set up their classroom with mats and chairs for a picnic and we had snack together inside. The buddies then worked together on step-by-step drawings and enjoyed some quality time together! The only pictures I got have students' faces in them so I can't post them here!
