May 12-15

Hello families,

Here's our weekly update!

In science we have returned to our focus on Earth Systems. We learned a little bit about environmentalism and caring for the Earth. We also learned a bit about extreme weather and the impact it can have on the environment, and looked at different types of landforms!

In social studies, we continued our learning about The Seven Sacred Teachings. We learned about the eagle and how it represents love. One comment that resonated with me from Elder Hazel's video is that we are never too busy to be kind, caring and patient. We started working on some scratch art - students will be scratching an eagle feather into the black paint next week!

In math, students completed a bit of a summative assessment in measurement to see if we are ready to move on to the next concept. We also started a fun zoo design project that students have been really excited about. We will finish this up next week!

In literacy we started learning about alliteration! Students are excited to work on an ice cream project next week where they will be designing ice cream flavours using alliteration! We're also about half way through The Wild Robot and are continuing to enjoy following along with Roz and Brightbill! It's also that time of year again for government assessments! Some students will have to complete literacy and numeracy assessment in the upcoming weeks.

Here are our words for next week:

In health and wellness, we started learning about healthy eating! We started by reading "I Am Picky" and students drew and labelled their food likes and dislikes. We also then learned about healthy vs unhealthy food. We had a big talk about it being ok to eat unhealthy sometimes and that as children, they don't always have control over their food choices. We also talked about how eating healthy can be expensive! Students enjoyed using the iPads to play a couple of games where they could sort healthy and unhealthy foods.

For next week, I want students to learn about the food groups and do a food sort. I asked AI to create an image for me with different foods for students to cut out and sort into groups. Something did not compute and it gave me this picture. We had a good laugh about how silly it is, given that we've been discussing robots and AI a little bit, so I thought I'd share to give you a laugh too.
