April 28-May2

 Hello families,

What an exciting week in room 11!

On Monday we were SO lucky to see two eggs hatch right around lunch time! We welcomed Blackberry and Blueberry to our classroom! They are both very strong and confident, especially Blackberry! On Tuesday we didn't have any more eggs hatch and then were surprised to see two more chicks on Wednesday morning! Since these two took a little longer to hatch, they were quite lethargic and were taking a little longer to get strong but are now doing very well! We ended up naming them Golden Nugget and Oreo. Nugget has a bit of a club foot but seems to be getting stronger. On Saturday morning I will be bringing them back to Nanny McCluckins and they will be returned to the farm they came from to be reunited with their families! I didn't organize the eggs (Thanks Ms. Adamson!) and I don't know about the cost or anything, but this company was great to work with and gave really clear instructions if incubating eggs is something you're interested in doing! Enjoy the photos! I'm going to try to get really clear pictures of each chick this afternoon that I can share on next week's blog!

In math we continued to work on measurement. Students went on a measurement scavenger hunt in the classroom to look for items that were smaller than, wider than, longer than, narrower than, etc... another object. We also learned about area and tried to write our names and find the area. Students also practiced some non-standard measurement for area. Students only need to be able to order objects by area but I wanted to do a little bit more to help reinforce the concept of area. We didn't get into anything complicated like multiplication to find area! I can't share their area names but will share my example! We also completed our May calendars - there are a lot of special days in May!

In literacy, we wrapped up our learning about nouns, verbs and adjectives. We also took our imaginary friends that were designed last week and created a storyboard! Students will have the opportunity to write their whole story if they want, but will not have to do all of this writing (especially in grade 1!) In UFLI, we learned about the _ce sound and students learned a soft C poem that they brought home on Tuesday.

Here are the words for next week:

I changed America to Canada!

We also continued on with The Wild Robot and learned some more big words: aftermath, devastation, refuge, camouflage, technique, prowl, nocturnal, and lodge. In one of our Daily LA groups, we used their Frayer Model to better understand some of these words!

Lake Bonavista School is thrilled to welcome a Brass Quintet from the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra on Monday May 5.   Thank you to School Council for this wonderful opportunity for our students!

This performance supports our learning of the Alberta Music Curriculum.  Some of the outcomes covered include:
  • Awareness and appreciation of a variety of music
  • Distinguish among the sounds of common musical instruments
  • Recognize the instruments of the Brass Family
