May 5-9

Before our weekly update, I wanted to share a few more chick pictures! I brought them home on Friday night and got some great photos! Also, my cats were very curious! We had fun visiting with the ducks that hatched in room 9! They had 5 ducks! One gosling hatched in room 8 and we're still hoping for more! He is named Brightbill after the gosling in The Wild Robot. He is so cute and cuddly and has become the baby of the school - we all just want to hold him and snuggle him! We've been joking that all of our animal friends have become emotional support birds for the teachers!

On Monday, we had fun celebrating Music Monday with a quintet of french horns from the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. Students had fun singing some songs together in the gym and we enjoyed a musical performance from Mr. Link! There's a good reel on our school's instagram page as well if you'd like to hear the kids singing! Thousands of schools gathered in their gyms on Monday to sing "Hold On" by Triumph. @Montessori_LBS on Instagram.

On Monday we also celebrated Cinco de Mayo. Students had fun learning about the celebration and we worked together to make Papel Picado decorations for our classroom. We ended with a Mexican Hat Dance!

This week we also celebrated Hats On for Mental Heath Day! We read a really great story called "Ruby Finds a Worry" and students drew and wrote about a worry they have and what they could do to relieve that worry. Several students chose just to draw and write about ways to help a worry because they don't have any worries (ah, to be 7!!)

Here are our words for next week!

On Wednesday we also had a special visit from author, Lisa Bowes, and some soccer players from the Calgary Cavalry team! Every student was given a copy of "Lucy Tries Soccer" to bring home! Students were also provided with a discount for tickets to see the Calgary Cavalry team play at Spruce Meadows.

In social studies, we've been working with with Ms. Zimmer's class to learn about the Seven Sacred Teachings. We learned about the story of Turtle Island and discussed that there are many different creation stories. We talked about listening to different perspectives and showing respect to different ideas and beliefs. We learned about the teachings of the buffalo - respect! We are looking forward to a whole-school residency with Elder Shirley later this month! More information to come.

In math we've continued on with our measurement unit! Students enjoyed exploring weight using different materials and we learned about capacity. We also learned about Indigenous methods of measurement and enjoyed measuring different items in our classroom and school using these methods!

The spring fever has hit already and we've had some difficulty with following classroom expectations. Students are working towards a mystery reward - when they show the expected behaviours that we're working on (quick and quiet lineups, following instructions the first time, respectful listening on the carpet, and smooth transitions between activities) I will remove a sticky note and eventually reveal the mystery reward!

A brochure from Child Safe Canada was sent home this week. HEre's the link if you'd like to check out some of their Spring/Summer courses - https://childsafecanada.com/programs/children_ages_4-8
