This week students were working hard on a summative assessment for our patterns unit! Students had fun creating pattern art and used a checklist to make sure they were using specific types of patterns in their art. They also had a peer check their work to make sure they were including the correct patterns. On Monday, students planned their art, and on Tuesday they completed their art using crayons and watercolour paint. They look awesome!!
We worked on some skip counting a bit this week as well, including counting by 5s and 10s. This was pretty tricky for a lot of students and might be something we come back to after solidifying our understanding of place value. Here are the skip counting expectations for each grade:
Grade 1
1s to 100 starting at any number
Backwards from 20 to 0 by 1s
5s to 100 starting at 0
10s to 100 starting at 0
2s to 20 starting at 0
Grade 2
1s to 1000, forwards and backwards starting at any number
In literacy, we learned about L-blends such as sl, fl, gl, etc. and reviewed the letters W and J - we'll continue J on Monday and meet our J character! During Daily LA groups we continued working on CVC words using the Pink Box material for some groups, and other groups worked on word families. bossy e words, or even began novel studies!
Words for next week (grade 1s can choose either list):
In social studies, we learned about family. We discussed how families can all look different and that's ok! We read some stories about family and students drew and labelled a picture of their family. We mostly focused on the people who live with us instead of all of our extended family members.
In science, we continued learning about the properties of materials. Students chose two properties to compare and used a Venn Diagram to show their thinking! Students also chose a secret item in the classroom to describe and then had to have a classmate guess what their mystery item is!
We also enjoyed learning about different Indigenous tools and the materials they are made out of! Students chose one object to focus on and listed its' purpose, materials needed to build it, and listed properties of the object.
Please continue to search your homes for loose parts - our grade 1/2 team is still looking to build our collection!

This is a collaborative initiative for our learning community! Please ensure that purchased items are in their original packaging, and note that no food items (candy, chocolate etc.), or hand sanitizer and mouthwash will be accepted. Items will be collected from Monday December 2nd until Monday December 16th. Thank you for your support!
Weekend "Homework"
The LBS staff were up to something this week! We had some secret spirit days to surprise students with each day. Can you figure out what each days theme is? Think alliteration... (i.e. M______ Monday). Sorry the pictures are kind of fuzzy!

Hello families, We had a great week in room 11! The highlight of our week was our field trip to Studio Bell. Students learned about sound, pitch, volume and rhythm. They had so much fun exploring different musical instruments! Thanks so much to the volunteers who were able to join us. This year we are also planning a field trip to the new SAM Centre at Stampede Park and the Zoo! I learned at Studio Bell that students do not know many (if any) Canadian musicians. So, during snack time we're having "Canadian Musician Appreciation Time" - we are listening to different Canadian artists and deciding if we enjoy the music or not. This week we listened to The Tragically Hip and Corey Hart (they had "the sunglasses" at Studio Bell). They also don't know The Beatles so we'll have to listen to some of their songs as well! This week in science we also wrapped up our learning about matter, including...
Hello families, Here's our weekly update! In September we are focusing on building community in our classroom, getting to know each other, and learning classroom routines and expectations. I can tell the biggest thing we need to work on is noise level! 😅 We read the story "We Don't Eat our Classmates" and talked about treating other people the way we want to be treated. Students had fun doing a step-by-step drawing of a T-rex! We also learned about calendars and completed a calendar activity for September. Grade 2 students labelled each day and wrote the special days in September. Grade 1s could choose a calendar template where they wrote their own numbers to 30 or traced the numbers to 30. They were then asked to colour their calendar in a pattern as I wanted to see what they know about patterns already. These calendars will come home each month to help students and their families remember important events at school. We have so many birthdays in September and wil...
