Here's an update for our very short week! (I don't know how this blog ended up being so long with only 1.5 days of school - sorry! We've had a lot of absences so I just want to make sure everyone knows what was missed!)
We reviewed the letter H with our character Hippy Hippo! The action for letter H is like using a harmonica. Students enjoyed practicing their weekly words by building them. We also learned how to practice our words by writing them with coloured vowels.
Here are words for next week!
In math, Ms. Yip continued teaching students about patterns. Students learned about attributes in a pattern (including colour, shape, size and direction) and grade 2s had to combine two attributes to make a pattern. Students also had fun building patterns in nature on Friday! We wanted to take advantage of the ~good?~ weather before next week!
In health, we wrapped up our learning about boundaries, consent and personal safety. On Friday we learned about stranger safety, medication safety, and potentially unsafe substances. We discussed that most strangers are safe and friendly but it's important to never go anywhere with someone you don't know. We also learned that medication and cleaning products used in the wrong amount, at the wrong time, or for the wrong person can be dangerous. Students completed an activity where they sorted images based on whether they are safe or unsafe and drew one of their own ideas for each.
Grade 1:
Knowledge: Safety includes understanding the differences between situations that are safe and those that are unsafe or uncomfortable. Safety includes knowing the difference between safe and unsafe substances at home, in the school, and in the community. A variety of substances can be harmful, such as: household products, medication, and poison.
Learning Outcomes:
Identify trusted adults in the school and community who can support personal safety.
Describe differences between safe situations and unsafe or uncomfortable situations.
Identify household substances that may be harmful
Grade 2:
Knowledge: Safety is when individuals are free from physical harm or injury, illness, and emotional harm. Substances can be harmful if used incorrectly or not for the intended purpose. Situations and contexts may present different safety concerns.
Learning Outcomes:
Practise safety strategies and procedures in a variety of situations.
Discuss ways to respond in unsafe or uncomfortable situations.
Classify situations that are safe and unsafe.
Describe situations where substances may be harmful.
Examine how safety can be improved in a variety of situations.
On Thursday, I was so impressed with students' work choice time! Once students finished their work, they chose some work choices. Everyone was working together on different activities completely independently - the ultimate work period 'flow.' Makes my teacher heart happy!
Holiday Edition!!
Class Code: RC142429
Due Date: Monday, December 2nd
(we want to order in time to receive the orders before the Winter Break!)
If you would like the Scholastic order to be a Christmas gift and you do not want it given to your child, please make sure you send me an email to let me know. That way I can leave it in the office for you to pick up rather than sending it home with them!
Rock Your Mocs is a worldwide Indigenous Peoples movement held annually during Metis Week in Canada. People are encouraged to wear moccasins and Mukluks to celebrate the diverse Indigenous cultures across the globe. Rock your Mocs is about unifying Indigenous Peoples globally, promoting cultural pride, and showcasing the diversity of nations.
LBS staff and students are invited to wear their moccasins on Monday, November 18th if they are able to.
I have a book recommendation that I wanted to share with you all! These are books I just learned about that are designed to read with an adult - the adult reads the longer page and the child reads the speech bubbles - what a great idea! Each book focuses on different phonics skills. We have a few in our library for students to sign out as well.
Upcoming Dates
Monday, November 18th - Rock Your Mocs Day
Thursday, November 21st - Bonzai Fun Lunch
Friday, November 29th - PD Day - No School
Tuesday, December 3rd - Studio Bell Field Trip
Thursday, December 12th - Winter Event - More information to come
Our first two days of school in room 11 were great! We enjoyed reading some stories together, getting to know each other and our classroom space, and students enjoyed exploring different work choices together in the classroom. We've also already celebrated two birthdays in the classroom! We had gym outside on Thursday and Friday and are looking forward to joining Ms. Zimmer's class for gym next week! We talked a lot about different expectations at school and why it's important to follow the classroom expectations. I always use my cat, Eli, to show listening expectations on the carpet. A notice from School Council came home today! (At least one was found on the ground so I just wanted to make sure everyone saw) Soft Entry We will be starting "Soft Entry" on Wednesday, September 4th. This means that students can arrive between 8:00-8:10 am, come through the garden doors and walk down to their classrooms. The teachers will be on supervision at the door, in the ...
Hello families, We had a great week in room 11! The highlight of our week was our field trip to Studio Bell. Students learned about sound, pitch, volume and rhythm. They had so much fun exploring different musical instruments! Thanks so much to the volunteers who were able to join us. This year we are also planning a field trip to the new SAM Centre at Stampede Park and the Zoo! I learned at Studio Bell that students do not know many (if any) Canadian musicians. So, during snack time we're having "Canadian Musician Appreciation Time" - we are listening to different Canadian artists and deciding if we enjoy the music or not. This week we listened to The Tragically Hip and Corey Hart (they had "the sunglasses" at Studio Bell). They also don't know The Beatles so we'll have to listen to some of their songs as well! This week in science we also wrapped up our learning about matter, including...
Hello families, My apologies again about not making a blog post last week! Here's what we got up to this week: We enjoyed spending lots of time with Elder Shirley on Wednesday morning. She walked students through a smudge and talked about some of the sacred medicines. She taught us how to hoop dance and how we can tell a story using our bodies and the hoops. We also enjoyed spending time outside with the hoops and some stuffed animal friends. We performed some hoop dancing for Ms. Zimmer's class and then enjoyed watching Elder Shirley perform some hoop dancing. We also met her mischievous bear friend, Lemon! We're continuing to learn about the Indigenous Seven Sacred Teachings. This week we learned about the teaching of honesty which is represented by the Sabe. Students wrote about a time when they showed honesty. We also read a story called Finn's Little Fibs by Tom Percival and students used loose parts to create a time when they fibbed....
