Our MRU student teacher, Ms. Yip, has begun teaching students about cycles and patterns in math. Students started by learning what a cycle is, and explored the season cycle, the day and night cycle, and life cycles.
Students were also introduced to repeating patterns. They had to identify the core of patterns and enjoyed creating their own patterns with different building materials. We will be continuing to learn about patterns after the fall break!
In literacy, we learned a bit about plural and singular nouns. We learned that when we add an -s to the end of a word it sometimes makes the /s/ sound (cats) and sometimes makes the /z/ sound (bags). We also reviewed the letter K with our character Kimmy Kangaroo. During Daily LA, students on the word work station are working with Ms. Yip and students at the teacher table are continuing to work with me.
We started learning how to practice our high-frequency words with sky, grass dirt writing practice, rainbow writing, pyramid writing, and hidden words. During Daily LA, some groups played a matching game to help practice reading their words! We are going to keep using the same words next week since we only have school on Thursday and Friday.
This week we also learned a little bit about Diwali. Students had to write 4 things (gr 1) or 6 things (gr 2) that they learned about Diwali. Some students chose to colour Rangoli designs as a work choice.
We learned about Remembrance Day and attended a Remembrance Day assembly on Thursday morning. We read Proud as a Peacock, Brave as a Lion and learned a little more about the history of Remembrance Day and why we wear poppies. Students enjoyed making some poppy artwork our of ripped paper and pipe cleaners. The background for their art is the original news article that In Flanders Field was published in! The Grade 1/2 classes also enjoyed listening to Mr. Link play and sing the song "Riding with Private Malone" by David Ball - this is a song that tells the story of a soldier.. it's a little sad but very touching!
Students working on a Remembrance Day Responsible Work Choice!
On Thursday we had time for a quick science lesson where we learned about the measurable properties of objects including: length, mass and area. Students went on a search for items that were long and short, heavy and light, and big and small.

Hello families, We had a great week in room 11! The highlight of our week was our field trip to Studio Bell. Students learned about sound, pitch, volume and rhythm. They had so much fun exploring different musical instruments! Thanks so much to the volunteers who were able to join us. This year we are also planning a field trip to the new SAM Centre at Stampede Park and the Zoo! I learned at Studio Bell that students do not know many (if any) Canadian musicians. So, during snack time we're having "Canadian Musician Appreciation Time" - we are listening to different Canadian artists and deciding if we enjoy the music or not. This week we listened to The Tragically Hip and Corey Hart (they had "the sunglasses" at Studio Bell). They also don't know The Beatles so we'll have to listen to some of their songs as well! This week in science we also wrapped up our learning about matter, including...
Hello families, Here's our weekly update! This week students were working hard on a summative assessment for our patterns unit! Students had fun creating pattern art and used a checklist to make sure they were using specific types of patterns in their art. They also had a peer check their work to make sure they were including the correct patterns. On Monday, students planned their art, and on Tuesday they completed their art using crayons and watercolour paint. They look awesome!! We worked on some skip counting a bit this week as well, including counting by 5s and 10s. This was pretty tricky for a lot of students and might be something we come back to after solidifying our understanding of place value. Here are the skip counting expectations for each grade: Grade 1 1s to 100 starting at any number Backwards from 20 to 0 by 1s 5s to 100 starting at 0 10s to 100 starting at 0 2s to 20 starting at 0 Grade 2 1s to 1000, forwards and backwards starting at any number ...
Hello families, Here's our weekly update! In September we are focusing on building community in our classroom, getting to know each other, and learning classroom routines and expectations. I can tell the biggest thing we need to work on is noise level! 😅 We read the story "We Don't Eat our Classmates" and talked about treating other people the way we want to be treated. Students had fun doing a step-by-step drawing of a T-rex! We also learned about calendars and completed a calendar activity for September. Grade 2 students labelled each day and wrote the special days in September. Grade 1s could choose a calendar template where they wrote their own numbers to 30 or traced the numbers to 30. They were then asked to colour their calendar in a pattern as I wanted to see what they know about patterns already. These calendars will come home each month to help students and their families remember important events at school. We have so many birthdays in September and wil...
