December 2-6

Hello families,

We had a great week in room 11!

The highlight of our week was our field trip to Studio Bell. Students learned about sound, pitch, volume and rhythm. They had so much fun exploring different musical instruments! Thanks so much to the volunteers who were able to join us. This year we are also planning a field trip to the new SAM Centre at Stampede Park and the Zoo!

I learned at Studio Bell that students do not know many (if any) Canadian musicians. So, during snack time we're having "Canadian Musician Appreciation Time" - we are listening to different Canadian artists and deciding if we enjoy the music or not. This week we listened to The Tragically Hip and Corey Hart (they had "the sunglasses" at Studio Bell). They also don't know The Beatles so we'll have to listen to some of their songs as well!

This week in science we also wrapped up our learning about matter, including objects, materials, natural and processed materials, and properties of materials!

In math, we worked on our December calendars - there are a lot of important dates in December! We also did some review of place value as Ms. Yip and I noticed we needed a little more practice with symbolic representations of numbers before moving on with our skip counting. Between now and Winter Break we will be working on greater and less than, even and odd, and will start looking at addition. Students enjoyed learning about comparing numbers with greater and less than symbols and made their own alligator mouth symbols. I love the saying in this video - "The hungry alligator eats the number that's greater, the number that's least is never part of its feast."

Last week, we read the story The Colour Monster. This week students finished up designing and writing about their colour monster.

This week we reviewed the letters J and Y with our characters Jenny Jaguar and Yakety Yak! Here are next week's words:

In PE, we have been learning floor hockey skills. We've been working on stick handling and shooting skills.

On Friday, students enjoyed making some winter tree art to help decorate our school for next week's Winter Event!

We talked as a class a little about homelessness and how we can show generosity to people during the Christmas season. Room 10 and 11 are collecting travel size q-tips and ear plugs. If you are able to bring some in, we would appreciate it! Thank you to families that have already sent items in!

Fill a Sock - This year LBS will be caring for our shared community of Calgary through the ‘Fill a Sock’ campaign through The Mustard Seed. This is a collaborative initiative for our learning community! Please ensure that purchased items are in their original packaging, and note that no food items (candy, chocolate etc.), or hand sanitizer and mouthwash will be accepted. Items will be collected from Monday December 2nd until Monday December 16th. Thank you for your support!

I didn't have luck finding travel-sized q-tips at Dollarama
but it looks like Superstore/Shoppers might have some!

I feel like we're asking a lot of you all - I apologize! However, if you have recyclable items that you can donate for a holiday building challenge can you please send them in with your child. This would include: small boxes, empty toilet paper or paper towel rolls, plastic bottles, jugs, egg cartons, plastic containers, etc. Thanks so much! We will need these items by Monday, December 16th!
