We've had a busy, and VERY cold week back to school!
This week I had to share with students that one of our hermit crabs, Sheldon, passed away before the winter break. I think he molted and then didn't find a new shell for whatever reason. I didn't want to tell them going into Christmas! This group of students is so invested in the crabs! However, I did pick up a new hermit crab so Jimmy wouldn't be alone. We are deciding between two names - Dewey and Cleo and will do our final vote on Tuesday. He (or she... it's really almost impossible to tell) is quite small compared to Jimmy but seems to be settling in well!
Math
In math this week, we did a bit of a review for patterns! Students were practicing their repeating patterns and grade 2s were practicing increasing and decreasing patterns.
We also continued learning about graphing. We collected data about the winter activities students did over the break (skiing, snowboarding, skating, sledding, etc.) and represented this data in a bar graph. We also learned about pictographs and practiced analyzing information from a pictograph. On Friday, we were going to collect a lot of data from our class but postponed since we only had 11 students.
Please note that the part about multiplying is not in grade 1 or 2 curriculum
- but we can skip count by 5s instead!
Our grade 1 students also started working on some government assessments in both literacy and numeracy this week. Each student will complete two literacy assessments focused on letters and sounds and reading regular, irregular and non-words. They are also working on some math assessments focused on number sense.
Literacy
We learned about the FLOSS(Z) rule this week! Ask your child what this means! We played some games and practiced sounding out words that use this rule. We also brainstormed words from the "-ell" word family and learned a poem using words from the "-all" word family.
We are continuing to learn about the Seven Sacred Teachings. This week we learned more about courage and honesty which are represented by the bear and sabe (or raven). Students wrote about a time they showed courage and decorated a bookmark with pictures and words that represent honesty. We read two stories called "The First Day" and "Misaabe's Stories."
Health & Wellness
We are now sharing our gym time with Ms. Greenhall's grade 1/2 class! This week we have been playing games and getting to know each classes safety rules and expectations in the gym. We're going to be starting a new unit on Tuesday! Our new gym time got switched around a bit so we will now be having gym from 8:45-9:15am Monday through Thursday.
This week we also learned about boundaries and how to set boundaries, including saying no! This is great review for our grade 2 students as we learned about consent and boundaries briefly at the end of last year. The kids LOVE this song and it really helps explain boundaries!

Our first two days of school in room 11 were great! We enjoyed reading some stories together, getting to know each other and our classroom space, and students enjoyed exploring different work choices together in the classroom. We've also already celebrated two birthdays in the classroom! We had gym outside on Thursday and Friday and are looking forward to joining Ms. Zimmer's class for gym next week! We talked a lot about different expectations at school and why it's important to follow the classroom expectations. I always use my cat, Eli, to show listening expectations on the carpet. A notice from School Council came home today! (At least one was found on the ground so I just wanted to make sure everyone saw) Soft Entry We will be starting "Soft Entry" on Wednesday, September 4th. This means that students can arrive between 8:00-8:10 am, come through the garden doors and walk down to their classrooms. The teachers will be on supervision at the door, in the ...
Hello families, My apologies again about not making a blog post last week! Here's what we got up to this week: We enjoyed spending lots of time with Elder Shirley on Wednesday morning. She walked students through a smudge and talked about some of the sacred medicines. She taught us how to hoop dance and how we can tell a story using our bodies and the hoops. We also enjoyed spending time outside with the hoops and some stuffed animal friends. We performed some hoop dancing for Ms. Zimmer's class and then enjoyed watching Elder Shirley perform some hoop dancing. We also met her mischievous bear friend, Lemon! We're continuing to learn about the Indigenous Seven Sacred Teachings. This week we learned about the teaching of honesty which is represented by the Sabe. Students wrote about a time when they showed honesty. We also read a story called Finn's Little Fibs by Tom Percival and students used loose parts to create a time when they fibbed....
Hello families, Here's our weekly update! In science we have returned to our focus on Earth Systems. We learned a little bit about environmentalism and caring for the Earth. We also learned a bit about extreme weather and the impact it can have on the environment, and looked at different types of landforms! In social studies, we continued our learning about The Seven Sacred Teachings. We learned about the eagle and how it represents love. One comment that resonated with me from Elder Hazel's video is that we are never too busy to be kind, caring and patient. We started working on some scratch art - students will be scratching an eagle feather into the black paint next week! In math, students completed a bit of a summative assessment in measurement to see if we are ready to move on to the next concept. We also started a fun zoo design project that students have been really excited about. We will finish this up next week! In literacy we started ...
