Here's our weekly update! We had to switch up our plans for this week with so many absences - there were lots of activities I didn't want so many students to miss!
Science
We had a great time at Fish Creek on Thursday! We were on the hunt for signs of animals and signs of positive and negative human interaction with the park. The students were excited to see lots of red squirrels and black-capped chickadees.
Checking out the creek!
Animal Evidence (Dogs?)
Negative human interaction - bird feed
Animal evidence - Red squirrel drey (nest)
More Red Squirrel dreys- in the same tree which is unusual!
Fungus on a Choke Cherry Tree
Animal Evidence - Beetles!
Animal Evidence - Red Squirrels (shells from pinecones)
Animal Scat - we thought deer or hare
Animal Evidence - Woodpeckers!
I'm going to share my Google Slides about animal adaptations so if you're child missed an animal and they'd like to learn about them at home, they can!
We learned about the long o sound with a bossy e (o_e).We also reviewed "a_e" "i_e" and "o_e." We did a poem called "Joe's Bone." We also started looking at the "e_e" sound on Friday. We will review this again on Monday!
Students practiced this skill independently when working on a "fix that sentence" activity.
Words for next week:
Math
We practiced representing addition with tally marks (gr 1) and open number lines (gr 2) as these appeared to be the most difficult for students.
During math groups a few students started learning about greater than and less than symbols! We also did our March calendar.
Health & Wellness
In gym, we had fun incorporating science by learning about life cycles and predator and prey!
We had a lot of absences this week so we decided to focus in on germs and how we can help protect ourselves from getting sick! "We watched The Magic School Bus: Inside Ralphie" where Ralphie gets sick and they get to see how his body fights the bacteria. We learned about white blood cells, the bloodstream, antibodies and infections! We brainstormed ways to practice personal hygiene and students drew and wrote four examples of how to do this in their sketch books.
Art
On Friday we learned about Pablo Picasso and did a first attempt at a cubism self-portrait! We talked about how Picasso does not use a lot of symmetry in his art.

Our first two days of school in room 11 were great! We enjoyed reading some stories together, getting to know each other and our classroom space, and students enjoyed exploring different work choices together in the classroom. We've also already celebrated two birthdays in the classroom! We had gym outside on Thursday and Friday and are looking forward to joining Ms. Zimmer's class for gym next week! We talked a lot about different expectations at school and why it's important to follow the classroom expectations. I always use my cat, Eli, to show listening expectations on the carpet. A notice from School Council came home today! (At least one was found on the ground so I just wanted to make sure everyone saw) Soft Entry We will be starting "Soft Entry" on Wednesday, September 4th. This means that students can arrive between 8:00-8:10 am, come through the garden doors and walk down to their classrooms. The teachers will be on supervision at the door, in the ...
Hello families, My apologies again about not making a blog post last week! Here's what we got up to this week: We enjoyed spending lots of time with Elder Shirley on Wednesday morning. She walked students through a smudge and talked about some of the sacred medicines. She taught us how to hoop dance and how we can tell a story using our bodies and the hoops. We also enjoyed spending time outside with the hoops and some stuffed animal friends. We performed some hoop dancing for Ms. Zimmer's class and then enjoyed watching Elder Shirley perform some hoop dancing. We also met her mischievous bear friend, Lemon! We're continuing to learn about the Indigenous Seven Sacred Teachings. This week we learned about the teaching of honesty which is represented by the Sabe. Students wrote about a time when they showed honesty. We also read a story called Finn's Little Fibs by Tom Percival and students used loose parts to create a time when they fibbed....
Hello families, Here's what we got up to this week! In social studies, we are wrapping up our learning about the Seven Sacred Teachings. We read the story, "Sometimes I Feel Like a Fox" by Danielle Daniel. Students then got to pick the Sacred Teaching that they connected to most for their own writing. Students used a graphic organizer to plan their writing. This included the character traits of their chosen animal, a time they demonstrated that sacred teaching, and lastly, students used Pebble Go to research one scientific fact about their animal. Students completed a 1st draft after sharing with a peer. They also underlined any words they felt may be spelled incorrectly so we can edit their work together. On Friday, students worked on some Sacred Teaching Art to accompany their writing. In math, we wrapped up our learning about fractions with a little quiz to see what students know. They did awesome! We did an addition and subtraction check in and refresher. I was hop...
