I hope you all had a restful Spring Break! Here's our weekly update !
Math
In math this week we started learning about subtraction. Grade 1s are working on subtraction within 20 and grade 2s are working on subtraction within 100. We learned how to use some of our Montessori materials to solve a subtraction question. On Friday we played some subtraction math games with our big buddy class!
We also did our April calendar and learned all about the important days coming up this month!
Literacy
We learned about the "-ed" ending on the end of verbs to show they happened in the past. The suffix "-ed" can make three different sounds. Ask your child about the three sounds!
UFLI -ed Activity
During Daily LA each group is working on a different Words Their Way word/picture sort! We didn't quite finish this since we had a short week!
When working at the teachers' table, we're working together to revise our "Who Am I?" writing to make it better. We're working on improving word choice, making sure the writing makes sense, and adding more detail! Next week we will start the editing process.
Writer's Workshop Process
We're getting close to finishing My Father's Dragon and are looking forward to watching the movie the week of April 15th.
Here are our high-frequency words for next week!
Science & Social Studies
We learned about landforms this week! We looked at some specific, important landforms that can be found in Alberta and learned about their significance. We also started learning about different bodies of water and fresh and salt water. Grade 2 students explored landforms in Alberta further by investigating a map of Alberta, and grade 1 students improved their geographical thinking skills by learning how to accurately and neatly colour a map of Canada.
PE
In phys ed we finished up learning about badminton and played some cooperative games. On Friday we did a fun challenge called "Find a Way" where students had to work together to figure out how everyone in the group can touch the ball without touching each other.
Please note that our gymnastics unit will begin on Monday! Students should be "ready to go, from head to toe!"
Upcoming Dates
Tuesday, April 9th - Artist in Residence Fish Creek Field Trip - Plant Walk
April 8-26 - Gymnastics
Thursday, April 18th - Taco Time Fun Lunch
Friday, April 19th - PD Day - No school for students
Our first two days of school in room 11 were great! We enjoyed reading some stories together, getting to know each other and our classroom space, and students enjoyed exploring different work choices together in the classroom. We've also already celebrated two birthdays in the classroom! We had gym outside on Thursday and Friday and are looking forward to joining Ms. Zimmer's class for gym next week! We talked a lot about different expectations at school and why it's important to follow the classroom expectations. I always use my cat, Eli, to show listening expectations on the carpet. A notice from School Council came home today! (At least one was found on the ground so I just wanted to make sure everyone saw) Soft Entry We will be starting "Soft Entry" on Wednesday, September 4th. This means that students can arrive between 8:00-8:10 am, come through the garden doors and walk down to their classrooms. The teachers will be on supervision at the door, in the ...
Hello families, Here's our weekly update! This week students were working hard on a summative assessment for our patterns unit! Students had fun creating pattern art and used a checklist to make sure they were using specific types of patterns in their art. They also had a peer check their work to make sure they were including the correct patterns. On Monday, students planned their art, and on Tuesday they completed their art using crayons and watercolour paint. They look awesome!! We worked on some skip counting a bit this week as well, including counting by 5s and 10s. This was pretty tricky for a lot of students and might be something we come back to after solidifying our understanding of place value. Here are the skip counting expectations for each grade: Grade 1 1s to 100 starting at any number Backwards from 20 to 0 by 1s 5s to 100 starting at 0 10s to 100 starting at 0 2s to 20 starting at 0 Grade 2 1s to 1000, forwards and backwards starting at any number ...
Hello families, Here's our weekly update! Our MRU student teacher, Ms. Yip, has begun teaching students about cycles and patterns in math. Students started by learning what a cycle is, and explored the season cycle, the day and night cycle, and life cycles. Students were also introduced to repeating patterns. They had to identify the core of patterns and enjoyed creating their own patterns with different building materials. We will be continuing to learn about patterns after the fall break! In literacy, we learned a bit about plural and singular nouns. We learned that when we add an -s to the end of a word it sometimes makes the /s/ sound (cats) and sometimes makes the /z/ sound (bags). We also reviewed the letter K with our character Kimmy Kangaroo. During Daily LA, students on the word work station are working with Ms. Yip and students at the teacher table are continuing to work with me. We started learning how to practice our high-frequency...
