Hello everyone! Yesterday we got started on our community project! Students took a look at the 4 landscapes and discussed the following questions with their groups: What do you notice? What is special about the land? What would be good about living there? bad? What resources would you have? Where have you seen a landscape like this before?  We will continue our work next week! Here are some photos of the landscape (not the straightest photos I've ever taken...) I've decided that we need a little extra practice with our math facts, and because Thursdays allow us to have a little more work period time, we are going to have our extra practice on Thursdays. Students either chose to practice adding numbers to 20 (horizontally and vertically) or adding numbers to 100 (without regrouping). I've been introducing some fun math games that we can play as a class and that students can do in a small group during their responsible work choice time. Today, students ...

Hello everyone! This morning we read the story "One" and talked about bullying and treating each other kindly. We also watched some videos about Pink Shirt Day . In an effort to continue practicing our group work, and spread the word about Pink Shirt Day, students worked in groups of 3-4 to design and create posters to put up in the school. I was quite impressed with their ability to share out jobs and work together on one poster! In the afternoon we just did 1 round of daily 5 so students had time to practice their weekly words (really didn't think the students would spend so long on their posters!) and we went to library. Remember to wear pink tomorrow! 💗 If you don't have anything pink, you can wear red or orange!

Hello families! We had a busy day today! This morning we had a presentation from the Bonavista Eye Clinic and their mascot Fribbit! Each chid will be bringing home some information and an eye ring. We then had our gym time indoors doing a workout. We then chose words from the "-and" family! On Friday, we ran out of time for free choice and a math number line game so I promised we would do both of those things today. We had a little bit of free choice after lunch and students ended their day in music. Tomorrow we will be having library and we will be talking about Pink Shirt Day . Pink Shirt Day is on Wednesday, February 26th! Remember to wear pink or something similar! This year their focus is to "Lift Each Other Up!" One World Drumming Tomorrow we will be starting a  One World Drumming Artist in Residence program . This company will be working with our school for the next two weeks. We are very excited about this unique experience! Our class wil...

Hello families! I mentioned the other day that students were really interested in the story "Why Should I Protect Nature?" So, today we read the story "The Earth Book" by Todd Parr and students drew and wrote about 4 things they do to help the Earth. During work period, students also practiced their "-ay" words and painted their clay landscapes from our Leighton Art Centre field trip. In the afternoon we had Daily 5 literacy time and we started talking about group work. We discussed the good things (benefits) of working in a group and the challenging parts of working in a group. This is what we came up with: Benefits: - Work with new people and make new friends - Help each other - Work faster - Each person can help with a different thing that they are good at Challenges:  - Trying to work together and share your ideas without being mean - Communicating with each other - Speaking in front of the whole group - Don't always get your ...

Today was the 100th day of school! We worked on a lot of fun tasks to celebrate! We watched a story called "Emily's First 100 Days of School" throughout the day. Students did some writing about 3-5 things they want to do before they turn 100 years old. As a class, we came up with 100 different words we know how to spell, and students completed a Seesaw activity where they made 100 emojis using 10 groups of 10 (this was optional!) In gym, we did a 100th day workout! We also did some estimating about which jar has 100 items. What do you think? Rice Beads Gems Room 13 Data: Which jar do you think has 100 items?  1 (Gems) - 9 students 2 (Beads) - 7 students 3 (Rice) - 2 students Oops! I forgot to add our Weekly Words to the blog yesterday!

Hello families! I hope everyone had a great long weekend! We had a bit of a different start to our day today as we had some gym and music switches. We went to gym first thing and then came back to the classroom and started our day as normal. We read a story called "Why Should I Protect Nature?" and had a really great conversation about the importance of protecting nature and ways that we can protect nature. We chose words from the "-ay" family and had music today instead of tomorrow! We will be starting a community project either later this week or at the beginning of next week so to lead up to that we will be reading some stories about nature and the land and communities and we will be doing some group work activities to practice the ways that we can effectively work in a group! In the afternoon we had Daily 5 literacy time and library. With Mrs. Melindy back, we have decided to coordinate our Daily 5 time so that students on the "Buddy Reading" ...
