In math, we are continuing to practice our doubles and doubles +1 using games, songs and activities. We are also still learning about 2D shapes and did some sorting with 2D shapes this week. We learned a new math game called Matho (similar to Bingo) and we played an addition game that got us up and moving on Friday!
In literacy, we are continuing to work on vowel sounds. Next week we will start learning about digraphs (letters that go together to make one sound, i.e. sh, ch, th). We are still doing Daily 5 twice per day which I have been loving! In our small groups we are working on a variety of things such as building words, working with word families, reviewing letter sounds, reading books, and this week we played some "sight word bingo." Sight words are sometimes referred to as "heart words" because we need to know them by heart. So you might hear your child use both terms.
This week we also talked about sentence writing and what makes a full sentence. A sentence has to have someone or something (a noun) doing something! A sentence needs to be a complete thought, begins with a capital letter and ends with punctuation. These are just "simple sentences" and we will move into "super sentences."
In social studies, we reviewed rights and responsibilities. Students had a good understanding of responsibilities, but rights are a bit trickier to understand. We read the story "I Have the Right to be a Child" and discussed all of the things that children have the right to do. Students then added 8 or more items to a child and included things that would make "a happy and healthy child."
We also began learning about landmarks and what makes a landmark (buildings, nature, signs, statues, etc.) We will continue with this work this week!
In science, we reviewed what we know about migration by matching up the animal and how it migrates, and have been learning about different animal adaptations in winter. We went on a community walk in hopes to see some local animals adapting in the winter. We didn't see a lot of wild life but still had a great time! We will continue with our learning about animal adaptations and will start our final project soon!
Our little hermit crab friend, Jovie, was feeling extra adventurous this week!
Report Cards
Report cards were released online today! Please take some time to review and read all of the comments. Each student will receive a next step in literacy and math, regardless of their current learning. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me!
Toys & Pokemon Cards
Toys and Pokemon cards continue to be a problem in the classroom. Students are asked not to bring extra items from home. There is always a chance they will get lost, stolen or destroyed. I hate to be the bad guy always taking away Pokemon cards, but they are a big source of distraction and frustration in the classroom. Please remind your child not to bring these items from home.
Valentine's Day
Again this year, students will not be permitted to bring Valentine's Day cards from home. We also are still not allowed to have shared snacks in the classroom. We will find other ways to show our appreciation for each other this Valentine's Day! I am thinking we may do a secret Valentine exchange within the class if students are interested.
Pink Shirt Day
Pink Shirt Day is coming up on Wednesday, February 23rd and room 10 and 11 will be responsible for teaching the school about this important day through a virtual assembly. As part of this assembly, we are going to have students learn the first part of the song "Count on Me" by Bruno Mars while I play guitar! I think repetition is the best way for young students to learn the song, so we will listen to it at school, but I wanted to share the video in case you want to practice at home.
Our first two days of school in room 11 were great! We enjoyed reading some stories together, getting to know each other and our classroom space, and students enjoyed exploring different work choices together in the classroom. We've also already celebrated two birthdays in the classroom! We had gym outside on Thursday and Friday and are looking forward to joining Ms. Zimmer's class for gym next week! We talked a lot about different expectations at school and why it's important to follow the classroom expectations. I always use my cat, Eli, to show listening expectations on the carpet. A notice from School Council came home today! (At least one was found on the ground so I just wanted to make sure everyone saw) Soft Entry We will be starting "Soft Entry" on Wednesday, September 4th. This means that students can arrive between 8:00-8:10 am, come through the garden doors and walk down to their classrooms. The teachers will be on supervision at the door, in the ...
Hello families, My apologies again about not making a blog post last week! Here's what we got up to this week: We enjoyed spending lots of time with Elder Shirley on Wednesday morning. She walked students through a smudge and talked about some of the sacred medicines. She taught us how to hoop dance and how we can tell a story using our bodies and the hoops. We also enjoyed spending time outside with the hoops and some stuffed animal friends. We performed some hoop dancing for Ms. Zimmer's class and then enjoyed watching Elder Shirley perform some hoop dancing. We also met her mischievous bear friend, Lemon! We're continuing to learn about the Indigenous Seven Sacred Teachings. This week we learned about the teaching of honesty which is represented by the Sabe. Students wrote about a time when they showed honesty. We also read a story called Finn's Little Fibs by Tom Percival and students used loose parts to create a time when they fibbed....
Hello families, Here's our weekly update! In science we have returned to our focus on Earth Systems. We learned a little bit about environmentalism and caring for the Earth. We also learned a bit about extreme weather and the impact it can have on the environment, and looked at different types of landforms! In social studies, we continued our learning about The Seven Sacred Teachings. We learned about the eagle and how it represents love. One comment that resonated with me from Elder Hazel's video is that we are never too busy to be kind, caring and patient. We started working on some scratch art - students will be scratching an eagle feather into the black paint next week! In math, students completed a bit of a summative assessment in measurement to see if we are ready to move on to the next concept. We also started a fun zoo design project that students have been really excited about. We will finish this up next week! In literacy we started ...
