September 3-6

Hello families,

Here's our weekly update!

In September we are focusing on building community in our classroom, getting to know each other, and learning classroom routines and expectations. I can tell the biggest thing we need to work on is noise level! 😅

We read the story "We Don't Eat our Classmates" and talked about treating other people the way we want to be treated. Students had fun doing a step-by-step drawing of a T-rex!

We also learned about calendars and completed a calendar activity for September. Grade 2 students labelled each day and wrote the special days in September. Grade 1s could choose a calendar template where they wrote their own numbers to 30 or traced the numbers to 30. They were then asked to colour their calendar in a pattern as I wanted to see what they know about patterns already. These calendars will come home each month to help students and their families remember important events at school. We have so many birthdays in September and will have one birthday walk every week!!

On Wednesday, we had our Welcome Back Assembly to introduce students to all of the staff members in our school!

This week we also started the UFLI program. We will be reviewing our letters and sounds and will practice printing our letters. We started with the letter A and enjoyed watching a couple videos about this sound. I also use the Animated Literacy program alongside UFLI as I find having an action to go with each sound helps students to remember the sounds more effectively! I'll add in a video of all the Animated Literacy characters and actions, but so far we have only covered A. In UFLI we completed lesson 1 and half of lesson 2 (letters A and M). You can check out the UFLI program HERE

We started with some number sense activities to see what students already know. In grade 1, we focus on numbers to 20, and in grade 2 we learn numbers to 100. Grade 1 students completed a roll and colour activity for numbers to 12, and grade 2s worked on filling in missing numbers from a hundreds chart. Next week we will be starting a variety of numeracy and literacy government assessments for both grade 1 and 2 students!

We've been learning about mindfulness and the importance of getting our brains and bodies calm and ready for learning. We've been using the "Big Idea" from Class Dojo about mindfulness. Students enjoyed drawing their "beast." Ask your child about what big emotion they feel sometimes!

On Friday, we had our first meeting with our big buddy class! This year we are buddies with Ms. Gerestein's grade 3/4 class. Students enjoyed getting to know each other and read a story together.
