Hello families! Happy Family Literacy Day! Here are some games that can be played at home to celebrate:  https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1dzbmTocQfj0Tzf2yAKiCeWXZrFtjUAui8fqbijCJmU4/edit?usp=sharing  On Thursday at our assembly, we learned about the program Spellie . We've been using it in the classroom now! There is a new word challenge every day if you'd like to try it on the weekend. Please don't do it in the mornings during the week as we will be using it at school!  This week we were very excited to have AARCS come visit us. Nicole came to speak to us about what AARCS does and how the money we raised helps them. She brought alone Bruja who is a foster dog - she was so sweet! We were so proud to raise $705.10!  In math we learned about addition! We read the story "The Mission of Addition" and took our first try at some addition problems. We also continued our work with data collection and the grade 2 students created their own survey questions, collecte...

Hello families,  Here are a few updates from this week. In math we learned about picto-graphs and completed a collaborative bar graph about our classroom birthdays. We've also continued to work with number bonds and did the same activity as last week, but also expressed the number bonds as addition equations. With our work with the dominos, the students have been really interested in working with them and watching domino videos!  The grade 1 students have also started working with me on some government numeracy assessments which we will continue next week!  In literacy, we continued learning about digraphs. We learned about the "ph" sound this week and reviewed all of the actions and characters. There was no Animated Literacy character for PH so we had Mr. Link use his art and music skills to create a character and a song for us. Ask your child about the action for "ph!" We have also been loving reading Junie B. Jones together. She is so mischievous and hilariou...

Hello families,  Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a restful Winter Break! We have been busy reviewing some learning this week and getting back into our usual classroom routines.  We've been starting each day with a Morning Message with a focus on 10 high-frequency words (pulled from the same document sent home in our home reading folders). We learned a little more about what high frequency words are (some sight words and some fully or partially decodable) and learned some different ways to practice them. Sometimes the partially decodable words are called "heart words" because there are parts of the word that we can decode and parts that we need to remember by heart.  We have also been reviewing some digraphs. We reviewed Ch, Sh, Th and Wh. Ask your child about the actions for these sounds! We LOVE these silly Scratch Garden videos for each digraph.  In math we continued with some data collection and graphing. We shared different winter activities that we did over ...

Hello families,  We made it to winter break! Woohoo!  This week we had some fun with holiday graphing and other winter math activities. We started learning about snowflakes and students started on a KWL chart to share what they know about snowflakes already, and what they are wondering about snowflakes. We will continue this in the new year! We enjoyed making some snowflake cards for Christmas time and a little gift for families! I usually make ornaments for students for Christmas but unfortunately didn't get to it this year. My older brother is going traveling in Asia for a year and leaves today so December has been all about spending as much time with my family as possible! So hopefully my little gift for students this year will suffice!  We loved all of the spirit days this week, especially Grinch Day! We also did some caroling as a full school and enjoyed lots of PE activities in the classroom since it was too cold to go outside and our gym is closed because our floor...

Hello families,  We had so much fun preparing for our AARCS fundraiser this week! Students were hard at work making posters, mixing ingredients, and packaging the treats. We made groups of 10 to count how many bags we were able to make. We made 113 bags of dog treats and 68 bags of cat treats. We completely sold out!  This week we worked on some graphing and data collection. We also enjoyed playing "Christmas Tree" (same game as Spider Legs!).  In social studies we continued learning about the Seven Sacred Teachings. We talked about love which is represented by the eagle. Students came up with ideas for how to show love to others, the land, and themselves. We also discussed courage which is represented by the bear.  Word Work Groups *This week was our last week of Word Work groups until the new year.* In Ms. Greenhall's Word Work Group students have been learning about consonants. This week we reviewed the letters V, Y, and Z using the Animated Literacy actions...
