Hello families,  Here's our weekly update!  Math In math this week we did a summative assessment for shapes to check for students' understanding. During opening task, students have been working on sorting 2D and 3D shapes using their own sorting rules.  We then started learning about fractions! In grade 1, students are learning about halves. In grade 2, students are learning about numerators and denominators, and dividing shapes into equal parts. We've been using some of our Montessori materials to help us with these concepts including the Fraction Skittles and the Fraction Circles.   Literacy This week we had a lot of fun learning about Reader's Theatre! One group did an example for us, and now all students are working in groups preparing a Reader's Theatre performance. I sent scripts home for student that want to practice - please send them back on Monday!  In UFLI we learned: ew, ui, ue - we started learning about au and aw but ran out of time and will contin...

Hello families,  Here's our update! Can you believe there are only 14 days of school left? (But who's counting...) Literacy This week we learned about the 'oo' long u sound (such as book or foot). We also learned the 'oo' sound as in cool or moon.  Here are our words for next week:  Math In math we did our June calendar and looked at all of the important dates coming up this month.  We also continued learning about shapes and had fun exploring different shape nets. We did a shape scavenger hunt around the school and students practiced travelling around the school more independently - showing respect and responsibility! Students are also created a shape Wanted poster for a shape of their choice!  Science In science we're continuing to explore the energy unit. We had fun experimenting with objects that roll and objects that slide. We tested them on a ramp and students recorded their predictions and findings in a table. Hello families,  Here's our weekly update!  We've enjoyed working on a little activity to celebrate Parents' Day this week! Parents' Day is on Saturday, June 1st. I hope you find a way to celebrate all the love and care you show each day! 💗 Math We're continuing to learn about shapes in math! We learned about sides, corners, vertices, faces and edges. We continued to explore different ways to sort shapes based on their attributes. This time, students were in charge of determining a sorting rule.  During Opening Task, students have been working on ordering a set of numbers from least to greatest.  Literacy This week we continued to look at long vowel teams. We learned about the long o sound and how 'oa' 'ow' and 'oe' can say ō. We also learned the long i sound as represented by 'ie' and 'igh.' Hello families,  Here's our weekly update! I didn't take many photos this week - oops!  Literacy This week in UFLI we learned about long vowel teams. We learned the general rule that "when two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking." We specifically looked at the "ai" and "ay" sound, as well as "ee" "ea" and "ey."  Here are our words for next week:  Students are not expected to remember which words use ir, ur, or er - we just want them practicing and knowing the "er" sound when reading!  The green list words come from the high-frequency list and use some of the vowel teams we've been learning - ay, ea, and ee.  Math In math we finished up our learning about measurement and have moved on to shapes! We started by looking at the difference between 2D shapes and 3D objects and discussed the attributes of 2D shapes. We began learning how to sort shapes! Grade 1s are sorting based on 1 attribute and ...

They really enjoyed this challenge. Students in grade 1 measured using counters and were provided to opportunity to try centimetres if they wanted to.  Wow lots of math this week! We also learned about area and capacity. We compared "paper pancakes" to see which ones had the most area. We looked at different bowls and pitchers to determine what holds the most and what holds the least. (lessons and images from Math Up!)  Literacy In UFLI this week we learned about the "er" sound that can be made by "ir," "ur," or "er."
