May 13-16
Hello families,
Here is our weekly update!
Math
We learned about Indigenous methods of measurement this week! Students really enjoyed measuring different items and distances in our classroom using these different methods.
Grade 2 students also learned how to measure using centimetres! They really enjoyed this challenge. Students in grade 1 measured using counters and were provided to opportunity to try centimetres if they wanted to.
Wow lots of math this week! We also learned about area and capacity. We compared "paper pancakes" to see which ones had the most area. We looked at different bowls and pitchers to determine what holds the most and what holds the least. (lessons and images from Math Up!)
Literacy
In UFLI this week we learned about the "er" sound that can be made by "ir," "ur," or "er." We also learned that when 'w' comes before "or" it often makes the "er" sound such as: word, worm, work, etc. Students also worked on some word work using ir, er, and ur and practiced using prefixes and suffixes to make new words.
Here are next week's words! The grade 1s have made it through all 125 high-frequency words so I pulled some r-controlled vowel words from the high-frequency list to make the green list!
We finished our our Sound Kreations dance residency. I personally LOVED it and really enjoyed watching the students put themselves out there and try something new! Also the partner dancing was SO cute!
This week we also started Financial Literacy! Students enjoyed learning about coins and bills. Anyone else remember the song "Canada in my Pocket?" They have an updated one from 2021 but I prefer the old one!

We have wrapped up our learning with Ms. Davies! All of the artwork the students have been working on has come together in a large art piece. Thank you, Ms. Davies!!
