Apr 29 - May 3
Hello families,
Here's our weekly update!
I missed a date on our May calendar's this week - please note that Wednesday May 8th is Hats on for Mental Health Day!
We also enjoyed visiting the chicks that hatched in Ms. Romanko's class this week!
This week we reviewed word endings using UFLI including y and le and we briefly chatted about some word families that use long vowel sounds even though there's no spelling pattern that makes this happen (for example no vowel team or bossy e) this includes: ild, ind, old, ost, and olt.
We also learned about r-controlled vowels and learned the "ar" sound. Together we brainstormed words with "ar" and students wrote 4 sentences using "ar" words.
Here are our words for next week:
Math
In math, we learned about key vocabulary that tells us weather a word problem is asking us to add or subtract. Students worked in table groups to sort the vocabulary words and then we discussed them all as a class. During opening task, students are answering mixed addition and subtraction word problems and are showing their answers using an equation and a picture. We talked about the trickiest vocabulary - How many more? or how much more? - it sounds like addition but really means we need to subtract!
We also started our measurement unit. Students worked in table groups to follow instructions to make snakes that were the correct length. They also worked in table groups to order mazes from shortest to longest using string! They enjoyed the challenge of figuring out which distance is longer - your head to your hip or your hip to your feet? (these lessons are from the Math UP program!) Next week we will be exploring non-standard measurement and grade 2s will learn to measure using centimetres.
Opening Task Example! |
Science
In science, students are working on a final project to show what they have learned over the past couple of months. They are designing their own planet that includes seasonal changes, how plants/people/animals adapt to survive the winter, landscapes and landforms, bodies of water, etc. Students are loving this project and it is so cool to see all of their creativity!
Social Studies
We are continuing to explore Eastern Canada and are specifically learning about Meteghan, Nova Scotia. We are learning about the Acadians and what life is like in Meteghan today and what it was like in the past. We are excited to see how all of our art work with Ms. Davies comes together to portray life in Meteghan! On Friday, students worked in groups to start creating Mind Maps focused on the people of Meteghan, the work in Meteghan, and the place of Meteghan. Our grade 2s were great leaders! We will continue this work next week.
Sound Kreations
We are excited to start our dance residency with Sound Kreations next week! On the days that we do not have dance, we will be going outside for our physical education time. Please make sure your child has appropriate clothing and footwear to participate in PE outdoors in the next two weeks!
