May 27-31

Hello families,

Here's our weekly update!

We've enjoyed working on a little activity to celebrate Parents' Day this week! Parents' Day is on Saturday, June 1st. I hope you find a way to celebrate all the love and care you show each day! 💗

Math

We're continuing to learn about shapes in math! We learned about sides, corners, vertices, faces and edges. We continued to explore different ways to sort shapes based on their attributes. This time, students were in charge of determining a sorting rule.

During Opening Task, students have been working on ordering a set of numbers from least to greatest.

Literacy

This week we continued to look at long vowel teams. We learned about the long o sound and how 'oa' 'ow' and 'oe' can say ō. We also learned the long i sound as represented by 'ie' and 'igh.' Students learned a poem called My Scary Night and had the option to bring it home! Some other literacy work was part of our Parents' Day activity so I won't share that on the blog!

When students are writing, it is difficult for them to determine which vowel team to use. We learned that 'oa' usually comes at the beginning or in the middle of a word and 'ow' comes in the middle or end of a word. We want students to recognize these spelling patterns when reading but aren't expecting them to use them accurately all the time when writing! English is so tricky!

Here are our words for next week! We've been so busy lately and keep running out of time for our spelling check-in! Grade 1 words are coming from the UFLI word lists for each vowel team. Grade 2s have also made it through their 300 high-frequency words - wow!

Science

In science we began exploring the Energy unit. Grade 2s did not learn this last year as it is part of our new curriculum so we are all starting with looking at the grade 1 curriculum.

We started by looking at movement and different ways that animals can move. We're looking forward to continuing this learning next week!

PE & Wellness

In physical education we've been enjoying spending more time outside! We're learning how to throw frisbees and skip with a skipping rope. We also had fun playing a big game of Capture the Flag with the other grade 1/2 classes and had fun playing kickball with our buddy class on Friday.

We are also continuing to explore financial literacy. We talked about the difference between a job and volunteering and discussed what we can do with our money. Students sorted different ideas as examples of spending, saving or sharing money.

Hermit Crabs
If anyone is interested in taking care of the hermit crabs over the summer break or part of the break, please send me an email! I do have a family interested so no pressure - just want to give someone else a chance to take them!
