Hello families,  We had an exciting week in room 11! On Monday, students were surprised with some animals eggs. We had fun this week learning about oviparous animals, using clues to try to figure out what types of eggs we have, and eventually learned that the eggs belonged to birds. We have three different types of bird eggs in our grade 1/2 classes. Our eggs are chick eggs! We also have duck and geese eggs! Now that we know they are chicks, we will be able to learn how the eggs are developing each day. We also learned how to candle the eggs to see if anything is growing. We received all of these eggs from a company called Nanny McCluckins and they will be returned there after they hatch. Chicken eggs take 21 days to incubate and we are expecting them to hatch around Monday, April 28th.    We put stars next to the ones we thought might actually be in the incubator!  This week we also had fun learning about arctic animals. Hello families!  Here's our weekly update!  In literacy, we started learning about parts of speech. We learned that nouns are people, places, things, animals and ideas. Maria Montessori designed grammar materials to help teach these concepts. We use the black pyramid or a large black triangle to represent the nouns in a sentence. This shape was chosen because pyramids are a noun that have been around for a very long time! We talked a little bit about the difference between common nouns and proper nouns.    Grade 1 examples   Grade 2 examples We also learned about the magic e! This is sometimes referred to as a Silent E, Magic E or Bossy E. Hello families!  I'm just sharing a quick update from the week but will keep it short! Thanks to everyone who was able to make it to our assembly on Tuesday! I wanted to share the Stick and Stone read aloud for you to watch at home.  In literacy we have been learning about r-controlled vowels. We looked at the ar and or sound, and began learning that er, ir and ur make the same sound! This can be tricky for students, especially when writing - they are not expected to remember when to use er, ir or ur as this will come with more reading experience.  Here are the words for the week after break:  In social studies this week we began learning about Indigenous groups in Canada and started with the Inuit communities in Canada. Hello families,  Here's our weekly update!  Gymnastics We're going to be starting gymnastics next week! Please make sure your child:  Has comfortable clothing Has long hair tied back  Has runners, bare feet or sticky socks!  We've been working really hard to get ready for our assembly! We've also been working on some writing to accompany this work and it will also be shared for conferences.
