March 31-April 4

Hello families!

Here's our weekly update!

In literacy, we started learning about parts of speech. We learned that nouns are people, places, things, animals and ideas. Maria Montessori designed grammar materials to help teach these concepts. We use the black pyramid or a large black triangle to represent the nouns in a sentence. This shape was chosen because pyramids are a noun that have been around for a very long time! We talked a little bit about the difference between common nouns and proper nouns.

We also learned about the magic e! This is sometimes referred to as a Silent E, Magic E or Bossy E. This is when we add an e to the end of a word and it changes the vowel sound (i.e. game, cake, rose, etc.)

Here are our words for next week!

In math, we worked on our April Calendar and continued working on fact families. Students had fun doing another "Esti Mystery" on Tuesday. We also worked on addition with missing addends! This is a tricky concept! We tried using number bonds and referred back to fact families to helps students remember the relationship between addition and subtraction.

In social studies we are continuing to learn about the Inuit people of Iqaluit. We learned more about the climate in Iqaluit and different modes of transportation. We also saw how daily life for people living in Iqaluit would be the same or different from Calgary.

In science we wrapped up our energy unit by making cup telephones! We have a bit more to learn about light and shadows but will come back to this when the weather is better! We also started our Earth Systems unit and started with some artwork of the Earth! We worked on an activity all about our favourite things about spring! Full details about the Earth Science curriculum can be found here (it is the 3rd organizing idea) - https://curriculum.learnalberta.ca/curriculum/en/c/sci1?s=SCI

On Monday I have a BIG surprise for students connected to science (but not Earth Systems - we're multi-tasking with science units over here!)

Thank you for your support in making sure students are "head to toe - ready to go!" We are having so much fun with our gymnastics unit in PE!

For our daily mindfulness time, we've been experimenting with different mindfulness techniques. We tried some binaural beats for focus and relaxation, counting our breaths with a breathing ball, and a sensory reset activity. We learned how we can use the sensory reset when we flip our lid or how we can use it for mindfulness and relaxation.

Volunteers needed in the classroom!

I'm looking for some artistic volunteers that might be able to help us out with an art project next week. For the Peace Night fundraiser below, we are creating a collaborative art piece that needs to be finished by next Friday. Students are going to work together to paint a corn hole game and I need a volunteer that can help supervise and manage the project (i.e. don't let the children go crazy with the paint!) while I help work with an manage the rest of the class. Please let me know if you're interested! Here are the times I'm thinking...

(AM = 10-11:30, PM = 12:30-2:30)
  • Monday AM or PM
  • Tuesday PM
  • Wednesday AM (10:30-11:30
  • Thursday PM
  • Friday Anytime (if needed for finishing touches)
I'm not expecting it will take this long but these are the more open periods of time in our schedule! Please send me an email if you can help out!
