April 14-17

Hello families,

We had a fun, short week in room 11!

At the zoo we enjoyed our program about polar bears and other arctic animals! We got to look at lots of cool artifacts! Students had fun exploring the zoo in their small groups, and had lots of fun playing at the Bugtopia playground at lunch time (I'm sure this was a favourite part for many students!)

In literacy, we learned about adjectives! We've been practicing identifying nouns, verbs and adjectives in sentences and using the Montessori grammar symbols to represent each part of speech! In some small groups, we used another Montessori grammar material and talked about when to use the article "a" versus "an." Other small groups were practicing the magic e with our magic e wand!

Here are the words for next week! I changed up the red list a little to try to help students with remembering that tricky magic e and identifying the difference between CVC and CVCe words!

I was hoping to start reading The Wild Robot this week but with our field trip and me not feeling well, we didn't quite get around to it so we will start after Easter!

In math we moved on to measurement! We learned about what different things we can measure (height, length, depth, weight, capacity, time, etc.) and went on a hunt to find items that were shorter or longer than our measuring tool. On Tuesday we will do a fun Earth Day measurement activity!

To celebrate Easter, we had fun doing some Easter Bunny art using watercolour pencil crayons. We also had an outdoor Easter egg hunt where students used a map to locate 6 eggs. When they found the egg they had to copy down the design on their page. This was a great exercise in map reading!

We continued learning more about our chicks! Thursday was day 10 of their development and they take 21 days to incubate. On Day 9 we candled the eggs again - it was much harder to see inside which was a little disappointing... but also exciting because this means our chicks are growing and taking up lots of space inside the eggs! All 8 eggs appear to be growing well so I'm curious to see how many eggs will hatch!

In gymnastics we had fun with our Mission Impossible challenge! This was the end of our gymnastics unit!
