April 7-11

Hello families,

We had an exciting week in room 11! On Monday, students were surprised with some animals eggs. We had fun this week learning about oviparous animals, using clues to try to figure out what types of eggs we have, and eventually learned that the eggs belonged to birds. We have three different types of bird eggs in our grade 1/2 classes. Our eggs are chick eggs! We also have duck and geese eggs! Now that we know they are chicks, we will be able to learn how the eggs are developing each day. We also learned how to candle the eggs to see if anything is growing. We received all of these eggs from a company called Nanny McCluckins and they will be returned there after they hatch. Chicken eggs take 21 days to incubate and we are expecting them to hatch around Monday, April 28th.

We put stars next to the ones we thought might actually be in the incubator!

This week we also had fun learning about arctic animals. Students used the program Pebble GO to do some research on an arctic animal of their choice! They used a graphic organizer to record their information and many students used step by step drawings to help them draw their animal. We also learned about ecosystems and food chains and how the whole ecosystem can be destroyed if one little part is lost.

In literacy this week we learned about verbs! The Montessori symbol for verbs is a red sphere. This symbol was chosen because a sphere moves and rolls around (lots of movement and action) and the red also represents the sun which gives us energy and movement! We continued to work on the magic e sound!

Here are our words for next week:

This week we started a new Junie B. book called Junie B. Jones has a Monster Under her Bed. I have to apologize if there has been any trouble sleeping this week!! This is just a lighthearted silly story, but when I started reading it on Wednesday I was met with a lot of concerned looks. I promised the students there's no such thing as monsters (and I would never promise something I didn't mean!) and we talked a bit about not believing everything you see (i.e. AI generated videos). We are going to take a break from Junie B. and will be moving on to reading The Wild Robot!

In math we continued to work on our number of the day activity each morning and continued practicing missing addends. We also worked on subtraction with a missing subtrahend. This continues to be really tricky which is ok - I've been comparing these equations to number bonds and fact families which students are quite strong in. They are just having a hard time translating this knowledge to the equations! We are going to move on to measurement next week!

We also worked on our artwork for Peace Night! Thank you to the parents who were able to help us with this project!
