Oct. 13-16

Hello families! Here is an update from our week in room 13!

In math, we continue to learn about patterns. We will be wrapping up this work (for now) next week and we will return to patterns to learn more about number patterns at another time. Students have enjoyed exploring patterns through building and art, as well as identifying patterns in their environment. We continue to work on strengthening number sense. Students enjoyed playing some Halloween themed number sense games this week and can now use these as "Responsible Work Choices" when they are finished their Work Period learning tasks. "Boo Bump" has just one version but there are 3 different versions of "Catch the Ghost" with varying difficulties.

Calendar is part of our daily routine! This is also considered a math concept. Students really enjoy learning about the days of the week and months of the year. Here are some of the songs we frequently listen to - the students love coming up with actions to do every time we hear the current day or month!

This week we reviewed the letters V, Y, Q and Z. All of these characters are posted on our Google Classroom. We are almost finished reviewing letters and will then focus on vowel sounds and letter blends.

This week we started working on some "Spooky Halloween Books." Each student has a book and we are learning about the story behind different spooky creatures. We have been discussing that these stories are similar to fairytales or folktales. Students are doing step-by-step drawings of each creature and learning about them along the way. I thought this would be a fun activity for them leading up to Halloween!

Students have really been enjoying our Daily 5 literacy time (check out last week's blog if you're confused!) I think next week I will be able to start reading one-on-one or in small groups with students during this time.

Our Fall Poem is almost finished! We are having a hard time deciding the order of our found words. Here is what we currently have! I think students got a little carried away using Jamboard on the SmartBoard this morning, so we will just make sure that everyone is good with this order next week! (These were all words that were generated by students after viewing fall photos)

We have been discussing Canada and what we know about Canada a little bit this week. Students have enjoyed watching "Canada Crew" and learning more about where we live. Here is a link to one of my favourite Canada Crew videos. We will soon be learning more about how seasonal changes affect plants and animals!

Halloween at LBS 👻 🎃

LBS is planning low-key Halloween activities on Thursday October 29.

If children are planning to dress up at school, please discuss plans with them for:

  • a costume that is comfortable to wear all day: able to sit down, move around easily and complete school tasks throughout the day,
  • regular sanitizing and hand-washing, as usual,
  • using an AHS face mask, costumes with attached masks or other “Halloween masks” are not to be worn and are not suitable for preventing the spread of airborne droplets,
  • school-appropriate themes (no gore, weapons and so on),
  • no shared food to be brought to school.

Children are not required to wear costumes and may choose to wear orange and black. If your family does not participate in Halloween, there will be alternate tasks and activities provided.

Students will be looking at examples/non-examples of costumes in their classrooms.  Based on the weather, we may hold a costume parade outside. Students are asked to maintain physical distancing during this outdoor event. We will send an invitation via text to families if an outdoor parade will occur. Families will be invited to view the parade from outside the edges of our school field.
