Hello families,  Here's our weekly update!  We've enjoyed working on a little activity to celebrate Parents' Day this week! Parents' Day is on Saturday, June 1st. I hope you find a way to celebrate all the love and care you show each day! 💗 Math We're continuing to learn about shapes in math! We learned about sides, corners, vertices, faces and edges. We continued to explore different ways to sort shapes based on their attributes. This time, students were in charge of determining a sorting rule.  During Opening Task, students have been working on ordering a set of numbers from least to greatest.  Literacy This week we continued to look at long vowel teams. We learned about the long o sound and how 'oa' 'ow' and 'oe' can say ō. We also learned the long i sound as represented by 'ie' and 'igh.' Students learned a poem called My Scary Night and had the option to bring it home! Some other literacy work was part of our Parents...

Hello families,  Here's our weekly update! I didn't take many photos this week - oops!  Literacy This week in UFLI we learned about long vowel teams. We learned the general rule that "when two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking." We specifically looked at the "ai" and "ay" sound, as well as "ee" "ea" and "ey."  Here are our words for next week:  Students are not expected to remember which words use ir, ur, or er - we just want them practicing and knowing the "er" sound when reading!  The green list words come from the high-frequency list and use some of the vowel teams we've been learning - ay, ea, and ee.  Math In math we finished up our learning about measurement and have moved on to shapes! We started by looking at the difference between 2D shapes and 3D objects and discussed the attributes of 2D shapes. We began learning how to sort shapes! Grade 1s are sorting based on 1 attribute and ...

Hello families,  Here is our weekly update!  Math We learned about Indigenous methods of measurement this week! Students really enjoyed measuring different items and distances in our classroom using these different methods.    Grade 2 students also learned how to measure using centimetres! They really enjoyed this challenge. Students in grade 1 measured using counters and were provided to opportunity to try centimetres if they wanted to.  Wow lots of math this week! We also learned about area and capacity. We compared "paper pancakes" to see which ones had the most area. We looked at different bowls and pitchers to determine what holds the most and what holds the least. (lessons and images from Math Up!)  Literacy In UFLI this week we learned about the "er" sound that can be made by "ir," "ur," or "er." We also learned that when 'w' comes before "or" it often makes the "er" sound such as: word, worm, work, et...

We also learned the iteration process for measuring and had fun measuring outside on Friday with the beautiful weather!        Literacy This week in our UFLI program we continued learning about r-controlled vowels. We learned about the "or" sound and the "er" sound.  Students have been working on turning their Planet Projects into a writing piece.
