October 1-4

Hello families,

Happy October! 🦃🎃 Here's what we got up to this week!

In math, we looked at the October calendar and went through all of the important dates we don't want to forget this month! We've been practicing using tally marks to collect data and represent numbers and we've been practicing skip counting by 5s! We looked at a hundreds chart to see the pattern when we count by 5s.

Students worked in their table groups to collect as many items as they could in the classroom that were red, orange, blue, pink and green. They collected this data on a tally chart and then learned how to create a pictograph to graph the data. Grade 2 students were challenged to use a key of 1 symbol=2 items.

In literacy we've been working with CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words with the letters we have learned. We also learned the nasalized "an" and "am" sounds. We learned an "am" poem and students drew what they visualized in their minds. There is an "an" poem on the back if you'd like to do the activity at home!

We also used the iPads this week to learn how to use Khan Academy Kids and Epic! The students were very excited about this! Thanks for sending in headphones if you are able. I try to be mindful of screen time in the classroom so iPads are only used at certain times and not for too long!

Epic Class Code: hkh5229 (free version only works from 7:00am-3:00pm)
Khan Academy Kids Code: 9C2NP8

On Orange Shirt Day the grass ended up being too wet to do a sit-spot so we rescheduled our whole-school sit-spot for Tuesday afternoon. I was impressed that students sat quietly in their spots for 15 minutes either drawing what they saw around them, or practicing leaf doodles.

Students enjoyed celebrating their names this week! We talked about how special our names are and how hard it must be for parents to pick the perfect name for us! We also discussed the importance of knowing each others names and pronouncing them properly (including me - I am not longer responding to "hey teacher!") I can't post the students' examples of the work because of their names so here's mine so you can see the activity we did!

On Thursday we had so much fun with our big buddies! A couple of weeks ago their shared their dream room designs with us and invited us back to show us their final projects! We also went outside and completed a Buddy Challenge which was so fun to watch!

This week we continued talking about boundaries and consent. We read a couple of stories and talked about how sometimes our boundaries change depending on who we're with or sometimes our comfortability changes over time. Students made relationship circles to show people in their lives and how their boundaries change with different relationships. Again, I can't post the students' work as there are many names of classmates and family members on the page.

Unfortunately we've had a few items go missing from our classroom. Items from home should not be brought to school. We have lots of school materials (pencil crayons, markers, etc.) and students do not need to be bringing these from home. We are on the lookout for these cat markers. If they happened to make it to your home, one of our students would really like them back.
