October 7-11

Hello families,

Here's our weekly update!

This week we learned one of my favourite math games (perfect for October!) called Spider Legs. This is one that can easily be re-created at home. We went on a leaf hunt and collected leaves of different colours. Students worked in their table groups to record the data in a tally chart. We looked at an example and non-example of a bar graph, and grade 2s created a bar graph. Grade 1s showed their data by making a concrete graph with the leaves or by building a bar graph with unifix cubes.

We also enjoyed collecting data about our favourite thanksgiving foods! Students recorded this data in a tally chart and showed it in a bar graph.

We started our Daily LA (language arts) rotations this week. Students were split into 6 groups and will be doing a different station each day (read to self, work on writing, word work, buddy reading, listen to reading, and read with Ms. Midgley) We left out teacher table for now so I can monitor the other stations but we'll be adding it in next week!

We reviewed the letters O and D this week! Ask your child about the sound and action for each letter. We talked about a silly way to remember which way a d and b go as this often gets confusing (d for diaper and b for baby belly!)

During opening task, students have been working on sounding out words (they are able to choose their level) using many of the letters we've already reviewed this year. They were also working on showing numbers in different ways.

In science, we are starting our unit on Matter! We're learning what scientist do! We started by brainstorming what an object is - the students came up with ideas like: you can see and touch an object, sometimes you can hear an object, an object is not alive, they can be hard/soft/smooth/rough/squishy, etc. Students then went on an object hunt in the classroom, hallway and Learning Commons to see how many objects they could draw (and label for grade 2s!) in ten minutes.

In health, we are continuing to learn about boundaries and consent. We are practicing saying no, asking for permission and keeping our hands to ourselves. We are working towards a Halloween celebration in the classroom! I picked four things that the class needs a little extra practice on - each time they are able to show me one of these expectations, we are able to colour in a section of the pumpkin.

In preparation for our Art Card work next week, we started learning about warm and cool colours. We made a "Hot Dog" and "Cool Cat" to help us remember these colours.

We enjoyed learning all about Thanksgiving! Students made a "thankful pie" to share five things they are thankful for. We talked about different traditions that families may have during thanksgiving time and all year round. We enjoyed watching this video about children teaching each other about their culture and traditions.

On our walking field trip with Ms. Greenhall's class, we read the story "Giving Thanks" and students sketched things that they noticed in nature that they are grateful for. We enjoyed spending time together in the community!
