October 21-24

Hello families here's our weekly update!

This week in health, we continued discussing consent and boundaries and personal safety. We talked about good and bad secrets or the difference between a surprise (good) and a secret (bad). We learned how to draw some elevated stick people and students worked on creating a safety network of 5 people they can go to if they are feeling unsafe. Ask your child who they drew in their safety network!

In math, we worked on creating our pictographs and we made some fruit bar graphs! We also started learning place value and how we can show numbers using tens and ones. We learned a few Montessori math materials such as the Teens Board and Tens Board (with the Coloured Bead Bars) and the Golden Beads and Large Number Cards. Students were able to choose their level of work - we talked about what makes a good level of work - something that challenges you a little so your brain can get stronger, but not something that's too challenging because we can't learn when we're too frustrated.

We also began exploring even and odd numbers!

In literacy, we reviewed the letters G and B. Ask your child about the action for each letter! This week we worked on some writing that will be shared at conferences. Students have also been doing an excellent job with our Daily LA stations each day! They are building their independence which allows me to work with small groups without being interrupted.

As a class, we've been reading Eerie Elementary: The School is Alive! It's a little bit on the creepy side but we're keeping it light hearted with lots of reminders that there's no way for the school to be alive!

In science we learned about natural and processed materials. Students chose objects in the classroom and labelled all the different materials they are made out of. Students also found objects in the classroom and drew and labelled the many different materials they are made out of!

In PE, we've been enjoying some Halloween themed games! We're continuing to work on our under-hand throwing and catching skills.
