April 11-14

 Hello families,

We've had a busy week full of fun and learning!

Students have been enjoying continuing to learn about nutrition and exploring different mystery foods. This week students tried hard boiled eggs and milk! They were very excited about their "mini cups." After trying the food, students wrote about the food using their five senses. This week students started the planning process for their snack writing. They enjoyed eating and describing some of their favourite snacks using a graphic organizer!

In math this week, we continued learning about subtraction. Grade 1s are working on subtraction within 20 and grade 2s are working on subtraction to 100. This week they learned the stacking method to subtract - working with the ones before moving on to the tens. Students enjoyed using the Montessori Bead Bars and Golden Beads as well as the Stamp Game to concretely solve subtraction problems.

On Friday, grade 1 students learned about fact families and the relationships between addition and subtraction!

Working on a math challenge with grade 2 students during Math Groups - subtraction with borrowing!

Here are some links to the virtual golden beads and virtual stamp game. The Rekenreks or Math Racks are great for grade 1s!

Students have been loving gymnastics! Next week we will be working with the Canadian Climber. If your child has long hair, please make sure they have a hair elastic. We don't want any hair getting caught in the equipment!

In social studies, students looked at photos of Calgary many years ago compared to today! We also began talking about Alberta and enjoyed watching a travel video. This couple has many videos about Canada and actually live in Calgary!

Here is a link to some Calgary then and now photos - we didn't look at all of these!

In science, we continued discussing the importance of water. Students watched videos and had discussions with their classmates about what we would do without water.

Volunteers Needed
Next week we are starting to work with our Artist in Residence Ms. Sharon again! We will have sessions with her on Tuesday, April 18th and Tuesday, April 25th from 12:30-1:30pm. If you have CBE clearance and are interested in volunteering, please send me an email! I'm not 100% sure how much help we will need, if any, but I want to have extra hands in case. Thank you!!
