April 24-28

 Hello families!

I can't believe we're in the single digit-countdown for weeks of school left - only 9 and we have a lot to learn still!

This week in math, students were really excited to start learning about fractions. Fractions are a new concept for grade 1 and 2 students as it was not taught until grade 3 in the old curriculum. If students in grade 1 are showing a strong understanding of halfs, they will have the opportunity to explore fractions further alongside the grade 2s! This week we started with a pre-assessment and learned about equal and unequal parts. Students then began learning about numerators and denominators - they are really excited about this new concept! They were even chanting about fractions!

During our morning task, students have also been working on addition and subtraction word problems! We've been pulling out key vocabulary that helps us to determine if a word problem is asking us to add or subtract.

In literacy this week we have been talking about r-controlled vowels. We reviewed the "ar" sound with our Animated Literacy character Arnie Ardvark and talked about the "or" sound with Orty Orsen. Next week we will continue learning about er, ir, and ur which are a bit trickier because they all sound the same!

In science we continued learning about buoyancy. The students enjoyed making hypothesis about whether objects would sink or float. They did a great job justifying their answers. We talked a lot about the type of material each object was made out of and how much air was inside the object. We tested these items: oil, shell, rock, popsicle stick, cork, pipe cleaner, paper clip, crayon, Lego and a plastic spoon.

Upcoming Building Project

Next week, students will be designing and building a boat. Start collecting items that you think would work well for boat building - we will be designing on Monday and building on Tuesday!

In social studies we continued learning about Alberta and Canada. Students worked on an activity in their sketchbooks where they drew and wrote about 4 communities that they belong to.

On Tuesday we had another art session with Ms. Sharon. Students learned different sketching techniques and worked together to draw the different parts of the water-cycle. We can't wait to see all of the classes' work up in the frames in the main foyer of the school! On Wednesday we enjoyed visiting a park close to the school to look for different natural and man-made patterns in nature!

This week we also started our unit on Financial Literacy. This is another topic that is new to our Physical Education and Wellness curriculum. We are using the grade 1 and grade 2 programs provided by Junior Achievement Canada. All students will participate in both activities since this is new learning for all of us! Currently, we are focusing on our families and what we can do to contribute to our communities. Next week we will be discussing needs versus wants, goods and services and jobs in the community!

Netball - Forms coming home Monday!

Lake Bonavista School is participating in netball from May 8th until May 16th in our gymnasium. This sport involves foundational movement skills such as jumping, running, throwing, and catching. As described on the Netball Alberta website (www.netballalberta.com): “Netball is an exciting, fast and skillful game of fair contest: It is a game in which two teams of seven players each strive to keep or gain possession of the ball. Players have specified areas in which they can move.”

Parent Council has graciously provided the funding to bring this event into our school.

Consent forms will be sent home with your child.  Please sign and return the forms so your child is able to participate in this fun LBS event! Forms are DUE WEDNESDAY, MAY 3, 2023!

Thanks,
