April 3-6

Hello families,

Happy Easter! I hope you all have a nice time visiting with family this weekend! 🐣

I can't believe there are less than three months left of the school year - this year is flying by! Here are some highlights from this week!

This week students were excited to start gymnastics in PE! I am not a gymnastics instructor and our gymnastics at school is different than gymnastics lessons outside of school. Students will not be learning somersaults, cartwheels, headstands, etc. This week we learned about safety including our head to toe check, how to move around the gym safely, and safety landings. We worked with the mats this week and learned some different types of balances, jumps, and ways to travel.

Gymnastics!!

We will begin gymnastics in our regularly scheduled gym classes on Monday, April 3rd.  The gymnastics unit will last until Thursday, May 4th.  Safety routines, cooperation and sportsmanship are taught and reviewed in each class.

This physical activity opportunity will help students acquire individual skills through a variety of developmentally appropriate movement activities.

It is important for students to come to school prepared to be actively engaged. The following guidelines are very helpful…

HEAD TO TOE - READY TO GO!!!

Head ....................... long hair pulled back

Ears/Throat/Wrist ............... jewellery off

Shirt.................................. one layer shirt

Waist ................................................tucked in

Pants.........................sporty pants or shorts, no belts or zippers

Ankles..........................pants rolled up if ankles are covered

Toes...............running shoes, gymnastic slippers or bare feet (no footed tights)

“Playing & moving safely is everyone’s responsibility"

Our class has access to the gym Monday-Wednesday and some Fridays. We have PE outdoors on Thursdays or join another class if it is too cold.

In math, we started learning a bit about subtraction and students worked on a partner activity to solve an open-ended math problem. Students were encouraged to come up with as many solutions as they could, and show their thinking using pictures, words, and numbers. Students used materials to help them solve the problem.

Students also created their April calendars to help them remember all of the important days this month!

This week we also started our guest reader program! It has been great seeing students sharing stories with their classmates. After reading, the class shares two stars and a wish for feedback to help the guest reader improve next time. This information will be sent home to share with families so you can help your child with their goal for next time! If your child was interested in signing up for April, they would have brought home a schedule. If your child has changed their mind and would like to read in April, please send me an email as we have a few spots left. There will be new schedules for May and June.

We have been loving the warmer weather! This week we learned a little more about spring and students drew and labelled their favourite things about spring.

We've also been continuing to learn about our 5 senses in connection with our nutrition unit. This week students had another mystery food item which ended up being apples! They enjoyed trying apples and wrote about what it tasted like, looked like, felt like, sounded like, and smelled like. Students brought home an apple recipe to try at home! Students also practiced writing adjectives to describe food using their 5 senses. Next week we will be starting some favourite food writing where students will complete the writer's workshop process to share about their favourite food. If you are able, please send one of your child's favourite snacks on Wednesday, April 12th to help them with their descriptive writing! It's much easier for them if that have the snack with them to look at, smell, taste and touch! We will be sharing about our nutrition learning at the next School Council meeting - see School Messenger for more info!
