This week we have been enjoying spending extra time outside! We are challenging ourselves to spend at least 30 minutes outside each day! Here's what we did this week!
On Monday, we enjoyed mindful colouring and reading our Junie B. Jones story in the garden.
On Tuesday, we brought some of our work period outside! Students worked on a fraction and "er" activity. They did awesome and the weather was beautiful!
On Wednesday, we had a snack picnic outside and talked about mental health. We read a story called The Boy with Big, Big Feelings.
On Thursday we enjoyed having PE outdoors with some of our big buddy class! Students enjoyed using some different equipment and playing soccer! We will likely enjoy a little more time with some of our grade 3 buddies in the upcoming weeks while the grade 4s participate in special health lessons!
The grade 1/2 team is documenting all of our outdoor time in the hallway! If you do something fun outdoors on the weekend, please send me a photo and we can add it to our display! :)
This week in math, we continued working with addition and subtraction word problems in our morning tasks. We also continued working on fractions. Students are working on a fraction pizza project!
In science, we have been enjoying designing, building and testing boats! Thanks for your help with sending in materials!
We also started our learning about small crawling and flying animals and the needs of animals! We reviewed what we learned last year about bees and what we learned at the kindergarten sharing assembly about bees! We watched a video and students did some sketch-noting to record what they learned.
In social studies, we began learning about the Inuit communities of Canada. We will be continuing with this learning next week!
We also continued learning about money and finances! We learned about the difference between needs and wants and learned that we need money for both. To responsibly use our money, we should buy our needs before our wants. We also learned about ways to purchase goods (cash, debit and credit). Students enjoyed learning about the different coins as well. I enjoyed sharing "Canada in my Pocket" with them as it's a song I remember from elementary school!
Grade 1/2 Singing Club
Grade 1/2 students have the opportunity to join singing club. This club will run on Wednesdays during lunch recess. If your child is interested in joining, they are committing to attending every Wednesday from May 3rd– June 7th. Students will be preparing a song to sing for our LBS Volunteer Tea.
If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Kawchuk or Ms. Midgley.
Thank you!

Our first two days of school in room 11 were great! We enjoyed reading some stories together, getting to know each other and our classroom space, and students enjoyed exploring different work choices together in the classroom. We've also already celebrated two birthdays in the classroom! We had gym outside on Thursday and Friday and are looking forward to joining Ms. Zimmer's class for gym next week! We talked a lot about different expectations at school and why it's important to follow the classroom expectations. I always use my cat, Eli, to show listening expectations on the carpet. A notice from School Council came home today! (At least one was found on the ground so I just wanted to make sure everyone saw) Soft Entry We will be starting "Soft Entry" on Wednesday, September 4th. This means that students can arrive between 8:00-8:10 am, come through the garden doors and walk down to their classrooms. The teachers will be on supervision at the door, in the ...
Hello families, Here's our weekly update! This week students were working hard on a summative assessment for our patterns unit! Students had fun creating pattern art and used a checklist to make sure they were using specific types of patterns in their art. They also had a peer check their work to make sure they were including the correct patterns. On Monday, students planned their art, and on Tuesday they completed their art using crayons and watercolour paint. They look awesome!! We worked on some skip counting a bit this week as well, including counting by 5s and 10s. This was pretty tricky for a lot of students and might be something we come back to after solidifying our understanding of place value. Here are the skip counting expectations for each grade: Grade 1 1s to 100 starting at any number Backwards from 20 to 0 by 1s 5s to 100 starting at 0 10s to 100 starting at 0 2s to 20 starting at 0 Grade 2 1s to 1000, forwards and backwards starting at any number ...
Hello families, Here's our weekly update! Our MRU student teacher, Ms. Yip, has begun teaching students about cycles and patterns in math. Students started by learning what a cycle is, and explored the season cycle, the day and night cycle, and life cycles. Students were also introduced to repeating patterns. They had to identify the core of patterns and enjoyed creating their own patterns with different building materials. We will be continuing to learn about patterns after the fall break! In literacy, we learned a bit about plural and singular nouns. We learned that when we add an -s to the end of a word it sometimes makes the /s/ sound (cats) and sometimes makes the /z/ sound (bags). We also reviewed the letter K with our character Kimmy Kangaroo. During Daily LA, students on the word work station are working with Ms. Yip and students at the teacher table are continuing to work with me. We started learning how to practice our high-frequency...
