We had some exciting things going on in the classroom this week! Students loved our visit with the Honey Merchants. Students learned a lot about bees - they are so fascinating and kind of gross! We got to learn from Katie, observe and touch artifacts, and observe live bees in her hive.
In science, we also learned about vertebrates and invertebrates and how vertebrates are classified: mammals, amphibians, reptiles, birds and fish. Grade 1 students sorted animals into two groups vertebrates and invertebrates) and grade 2s wrote and drew the characteristics of each type of vertebrate and and provided an example of each.
We also read a story called "Find out About Animal Homes." Students drew and labelled four examples of animal homes and who lives there.
The smoke this week put a bit of a damper on our outdoor challenge. On Monday, we were able to get outside and played a game together called Mouse Trap! Then on Friday, we were able to spend out PE time outdoors!
Ms. Shannon snapped this very apocalyptic
looking photo of or school yard on Tuesday!
Students enjoyed two more netball sessions this week! We learned a lot of important skills and drills on Tuesday, and students enjoyed playing netball on Thursday.
Next week we are looking forward to having Sifu Greenhall (Ms. Greenhall's dad!) visit our class to teach us Tai Chi!
Tai-Chi
Sifu Greenhall will be joining usagainto teach all the grade 1/2s tai-chi during their gym time. Our sessions are onThursday May 25thand Thursday, June 1st.Please ensure your child is wearing comfortable clothing these days as we may take our practice outside, weather permitting.
This week we wrapped up our learning about financial literacy in our families. We talked a bit about goods and services, maps and businesses, and being an entrepreneur! Students will bring their booklets home next week! Next week in Wellness, we will move on to some new learning about consent and boundaries. I have put lots of thought into how we will approach this topic at an age-appropriate level! We will be covering both the grade 1 and 2 curriculum with all students as the grade 2s did not learn this last year. We will even dip into the kindergarten curriculum as a starting point!
In math this week we continued learning ways to represent fractions and learned more about shapes and how to sort them based on attributes! We will continue this learning next week! We also learned a fun math game that is similar to hangman but with math. Students guess numbers and symbols instead of letters!
In literacy we were able to revise, edit and complete the good copy of our pocket writing! The editing part is still quite a bit tricky for students. I was able to sit one-on-one with everyone to go through the editing process together so hopefully this will help in the future!
This week we also started practicing some sight words. Students should be able to read and write a variety of sight words (see the high-frequency words in their home reading folders!) Students chose list 1 or 2 and practiced the five words all week. On Friday we did a little quiz - this is not meant to be stress inducing but gives them a low-stakes experience with testing! Students will practice 5 new words next week!
In social studies, we continued learning about the Inuit peoples of Canada. We learned more about their natural resources, way of life, and transportation.
Fish Creek Field Trip
On Tuesday, June 20th we will be heading to Fish Creek Park near Bow Valley Ranche for a field trip with Ms. Romanko and Ms. Greenhall's classes. We are looking for at least 5 volunteers to join us for this experience. Your responsibilities include supporting students during whole-group activities in the morning, supervising lunch, and leading small-group park exploration in the afternoon. If you have your CBE police clearance and are interested in volunteering on this day, please send me an email. I will do my best to take as many volunteers as I can and will give priority to those who have not had a chance to volunteer yet this year.
Hermit Crabs
Looking ahead to summertime, I am wondering if anyone is interested in taking care of our classroom hermit crabs during the summer break. I have busy summer ahead and will be out of town a lot so I would love some help taking care of them! We could have two or three families take turns throughout the summer if you are comfortable exchanging contact information and organizing pick-up/drop-off. Please send me an email if you're interested. I can always leave them with family if no one wants to take them so please don't feel obligated!
Hello families, We had a great week in room 11! The highlight of our week was our field trip to Studio Bell. Students learned about sound, pitch, volume and rhythm. They had so much fun exploring different musical instruments! Thanks so much to the volunteers who were able to join us. This year we are also planning a field trip to the new SAM Centre at Stampede Park and the Zoo! I learned at Studio Bell that students do not know many (if any) Canadian musicians. So, during snack time we're having "Canadian Musician Appreciation Time" - we are listening to different Canadian artists and deciding if we enjoy the music or not. This week we listened to The Tragically Hip and Corey Hart (they had "the sunglasses" at Studio Bell). They also don't know The Beatles so we'll have to listen to some of their songs as well! This week in science we also wrapped up our learning about matter, including...
Hello families, Here's our weekly update! This week students were working hard on a summative assessment for our patterns unit! Students had fun creating pattern art and used a checklist to make sure they were using specific types of patterns in their art. They also had a peer check their work to make sure they were including the correct patterns. On Monday, students planned their art, and on Tuesday they completed their art using crayons and watercolour paint. They look awesome!! We worked on some skip counting a bit this week as well, including counting by 5s and 10s. This was pretty tricky for a lot of students and might be something we come back to after solidifying our understanding of place value. Here are the skip counting expectations for each grade: Grade 1 1s to 100 starting at any number Backwards from 20 to 0 by 1s 5s to 100 starting at 0 10s to 100 starting at 0 2s to 20 starting at 0 Grade 2 1s to 1000, forwards and backwards starting at any number ...
Hello families, Here's our weekly update! In September we are focusing on building community in our classroom, getting to know each other, and learning classroom routines and expectations. I can tell the biggest thing we need to work on is noise level! 😅 We read the story "We Don't Eat our Classmates" and talked about treating other people the way we want to be treated. Students had fun doing a step-by-step drawing of a T-rex! We also learned about calendars and completed a calendar activity for September. Grade 2 students labelled each day and wrote the special days in September. Grade 1s could choose a calendar template where they wrote their own numbers to 30 or traced the numbers to 30. They were then asked to colour their calendar in a pattern as I wanted to see what they know about patterns already. These calendars will come home each month to help students and their families remember important events at school. We have so many birthdays in September and wil...
