May 23-26

Hello families,

This week we continued on with our One Nature challenge! On Tuesday, Ms. Romanko's class taught us how to play Elephant Soccer and we waved goodbye to our grade 5 an 6 friends as they left for Outdoor School at Camp Chief Hector for 4 days! On Wednesday and Thursday we enjoyed having snack in the garden and listening to guest reader in the garden. On Friday we enjoyed our PE time outdoors with the other grade 1/2 classes.

In math we've been reviewing balanced equations during our morning task. This is review from earlier in the year but still seems to be a bit challenging to understand! We've also been learning about 2D shapes including rectangles, rhombuses, and trapezoids. Students are identifying the numbers of sides and corners, and finding 4 things that are the same shape! We like the Storybots videos about shapes!

An example of balancing equations with addition! We've been working with some larger numbers in grade 2!

In science we learned about animal adaptations! Students worked in table groups to identify animal adaptations and what they are used for! They enjoyed working on this together and then presenting their ideas to the class.

In social studies, we continued learning about the Inuit peoples of Canada. Students wrote key words to describe the Northern Canadian way of life on an igloo, and pasted it on to some northern lights!

On Wednesday we started learning about consent and boundaries! We learned what boundaries are, how we can set them and why we should set them. We discussed how all of us should feel safe and comfortable at school (and everywhere!) and we have the right to communicate this to other people. We discussed boundaries as being physical, or not wanting to discuss certain topics or related to personal space and safety. We'll continue this learning in the next couple of weeks!

Rugby at LBS

Lake Bonavista School is participating in rugby from June 5th until June 8th in our school field. This sport involves foundational movement skills such as jumping, running, throwing, and catching. The goal of this experience is to learn the skills of rugby and will not involve any bodily contact.

Rugby Alberta has generously agreed to provide this residency free of charge.

Consent forms will be sent home with your child soon.  Please sign and return the forms so your child is able to participate in this fun LBS event! Forms are DUE WEDNESDAY, MAY 31, 2023.

Thanks,
