May 8-12
Hello families,
This week we continued on with our outdoor challenge! On Monday we had our PE time outside, on Tuesday we read the story "What's In Your Pocket?" and went into the garden to find small items to sketch and describe. On Wednesday, we started a writing plan for this task. On Thursday, we had a shape scavenger hunt outside. We were looking for rhombuses, ovals, trapezoids and hexagons! We somehow were able to find the nicest part of each day to enjoy outside!
Trapezoid in the rock wall
Oval in the chains
Rhombuses on the steps
The bolts on the playground are hexagons!
Trapezoid on the playground sign pole
During our morning task this week, students worked on "bossy r" word scrambles and did some fraction practice! We're learning different ways to represent fractions. We also enjoyed playing a fraction game with some of our buddy class!
This week in math we also started learning about shapes! Students were given a little pre-assessment to see if they know the names of some common 2D shapes and 3D objects. We watched my favourite video for explaining the difference between 2D and 3D.
In science, we started talking about animals and small, crawling and flying creatures. We learned the difference between domestic and wild animals, as well as working animals. Students were asked to define each type of animal and give 3-5 examples of each. It took awhile to understand the difference between giving a definition and giving an example but we got there eventually!
We are looking forward to continuing our learning of small crawling and flying creatures with our visit from the Honey Merchants next Thursday!
As I kind of mentioned above, we are starting a writing task based on the book "What's in your Pocket?" We are following our Writer's Workshop steps and began with pre-writing (brainstorming) and planning. As a class we did an example together with one of Mrs. Green's seashells. We talked about using our imagination a little to make up a reason why the item would be important to us (just to make our writing a little more interesting!) We also talked about using really strong adjectives and juicy words. This really set students up for success when creating their own writing plans!
Next week we will move on to our first draft and hopefully to revising and editing our work!
In social studies we continued learning about the Inuit population of Canada. We observed photos and videos of the landscape in northern Canada and learned that it is too cold for trees to go! There is lots of snow and ice as well. We also learned about Inukshuks and students did a water colouring painting of an Inukshuk.
On Friday, all of our grade 1/2 students met in the gym to learn about oral health. We talked about the importance of brushing our teeth and Colgate provided each student with a tooth brush and toothpaste.
Grade 1 students also brought home some seedlings today for Arbour Day! Grade 2s would have gotten these last year.
- 🎾 Next week we will have our netball lessons on Tuesday and Thursday from 10:20-11:00am.
- 🐝 Our Honey Merchants in-class field trip is on Thursday. It will begin promptly at 8:15am.
- 🌞 With the weather warming up again next week, we want to ask that students have sunscreen and/or bug spray applied in the morning before school rather than bringing these items to school. They can make our floors slippery and we do not want students sharing these items in case of allergies.
