June 19-23
Hello families,
This week we braved the rainy weather at Fish Creek Park! We ended our trip a little early but still had a great time. Thank you to our volunteers - these trips aren't possible without you!
On Wednesday, we celebrated National Indigenous Peoples Day. We enjoyed a lovely assembly where we received three flags from the CBE, reviewed our 2022-2023 Call to Action, and revealed our Call to Action for the 2023-2024 school year. We enjoyed a full school sit-spot outside where we were able to do our up, down, all around sketching routine - an activity that we were unable to do at Fish Creek due to the rain.
We also watched this video from the CBE to learn more about the three indigenous flags.
This week we also coordinated with the kindergarten teachers to give the kinders a chance to visit the grade 1/2 classrooms. Mrs. Sidhu and Ms. Mumford took all of the grade 2 students outside for PE while the kinders visited our classrooms. The grade 1s got to practice their role as leaders in the classroom. This was a great way to give our grade 1s a mentorship opportunity and allow the kinders to see some of our grade 1/2 learning spaces.
In math this week we learned about non-standard measurement. On Thursday, students practiced using classroom materials to measure items in our classroom. They filled out a table including their estimates. We then learned how to use the iteration process to measure on Friday and measured some items outside!
This week we also spent some time with our buddies! On Thursday they taught us how to play kickball with some modified rules to ensure everyone gets a turn. On Friday we enjoyed snack together in the garden and our class shared their National Geographic Books with their big buddies.
In PE, we've been enjoying learning some soccer skills! We practiced more of these skills this week and on Friday we tried playing one cone soccer!
Lastly, we learned about readers theatre! Students are preparing to perform their readers theatre with a small group next week. They are doing an awesome job so far! Several students asked to bring their scripts home to practice - this is not an expectation!
Rugby
This month we had the opportunity to participate in a Rugby residency supported by Rugby Alberta. It helped expose students to a new sport they might not ordinarily participate in. Here is information from Rugby Alberta if your child is interesting in participating further.
