June 5-8

Hello families,

This week we had an exciting start with our HAWCS visit! It was such a cool experience to watch the helicopter land and take off in our field.

This week we also enjoyed learning rugby! We learned a lot of skills from Breanne and continued our own practice on Thursday. Ask you child about the proper technique for throwing and catching a rugby ball.

In science, students used a Venn Diagram to compare animals! We also started turning our animal research into National Geographic book! Students are working hard to turn their jot notes into full sentences and display this information in a clear way using some features of a non-fiction text.

During our morning task this week, students were given a variety of math problems to solve. Our favourite was this one:

We also started looking at 3d shapes and their attributes. We learned about faces, edges and vertices and took a closer look at spheres and cones. We've defined each of these as:

  • Face: a flat surface of a shape
  • Edge: where two faces meet
  • Vertices: the corners of a shape where two edges meet
  • Vertex: one single corner

Students also explored building 3D shapes with Playdoh and toothpicks! They were challenged to see if they could create a cone or cylinder given that they have curved surfaces.

In health, students are continuing to learn about boundaries, consent and safety. We talked a little more about consent as well as secrets vs. surprises. Students made their own "safety networks" of people they trust and know they can talk to about secrets.

Sports Day

We are so excited to be able to host a Lake Bonavista School Sports Day in 2023! Sports Day will be taking place on Friday, June 16th from 9:00am – 11:50am, the end of day dismissal time will stay the same (12:15pm). On this day, students will begin in the gymnasium for a pep rally and then travel with their class outside to participate in group activities and games. Parent Council has generously provided a small snack for all students to enjoy during their outdoor time. Please pack an additional snack for your child to eat prior to heading outside for the day.

Here are some things to keep in mind:

·         Wear athletic clothing and shoes

·         Pack a water bottle and snack (we will have two snacks this day)

·         Please apply sunscreen and bug spray before arriving to school

·         We will be moving forward with Sports Day unless there are thunderstorms, please dress accordingly

Thanks for your support!
