February 3-7

Hello families,

Here's our weekly update! I, I mean we, survived three days of being stuck indoors this week! We talked a lot about how fresh air and exercise impacts our abilities to listen, follow instructions and learn. Thank goodness it's warmed up a little!

In literacy, we continued learning about digraphs (two consonants that go together to make one sound). We learned the 'sh' sound and the two sounds of 'th.' Students worked on "just-right" level work for these digraphs and completed, what I call, 4 square activities to practice their encoding and sentence writing skills!

Here are the words for next week. We are taking a break from the high-frequency list to do some Valentine's Day themed words. There will be no quiz next week.

In math we continued working on addition and subtraction. We learned how to use some of our Montessori materials to help us solve subtraction problems. We learned how to represent subtraction with pictures and had fun playing addition and subtraction games with our big buddies. We played subtraction Bingo as a class on Friday. We also worked on our February calendar!

In science we learned about pitch and volume!

In social studies, we are close to finishing up our artwork! We also started learning about communities and the different communities we belong to.

On Friday, we had fun exploring loose parts! Students were given 12 minutes to make their favourite place. We had a few Disneyland/world creations, home, a soccer stadium, and many more ideas!

Each week students will be working with Mr. Ripka on social emotional learning skills (SEL)! For those who don't know, Mr. Ripka teaches AM kindergarten and is now working with students in grade 1-6 in the afternoons. Students will have one 40-minute lesson with Mr. Ripka each week. Ask your child what they learned with him on Wednesday!

This video is mostly meant for adults but is appropriate for children as well!

In PE, we've been enjoying learning some different dances in preparation for the upcoming Family Dance!

This week a brochure from Child Safe Canada came home. They have many programs for different social and emotional skills. You can see more here - https://childsafecanada.com/programs/children_ages_4-8
