January 27-30

Hello families,

We had a busy week with lacrosse this week! Thank you School Council for this fun opportunity! Students had lots of fun learning new skills from Coach Dan! On the days we didn't have lacrosse, we had music and gym outside so our mornings went by quite quickly!

In math this week, we were continuing to learn strategies for addition and subtraction. We learned how to count back to subtract and used number lines and hundreds charts to help. We had fun playing a subtraction math game as well! Grade 1s worked on adding with multiple addends, and grade 2s learned how to show addition on an open number line.

Here's an example of the grade 2 open number line work - they found it really tricky so we mostly worked on it together. We start with the bigger number and then decompose the smaller number and add groups of 10 if we can! We are practicing skip counting by 10s starting at any number to help us with this skill. This is quite challenging so I'm not going to worry too much if students don't quite understand.  We will learn lots of addition and subtraction strategies and they can use what works for them!

We also enjoyed learning some more of our Montessori materials for addition!

In literacy we continued learning about the FLSZ (floss) rule and started learning about digraphs. Digraphs are two consonants that go together to make one sound. We learned about the "ck" sound and learned a poem called The Sick Duck which students brought home. We started (and almost finished) reading the 2nd Junie B. Jones book called "Junie B. Jones and a Little Monkey Business."

Here are our words for next week:

In science this week we took a bit of a pause on our learning about sound to learn about Sea Monkeys! We decided to learn all about these creatures and see if we could hatch some for our classroom. We enjoyed reading and watching videos to learn all about them and then added them to the tank on Tuesday afternoon. Let's see how long we can keep them alive for!

I'm not convinced anything is happening in there but who knows!

We called on our big buddies to help us with a social studies/art project this week! Our buddies helped with creating sentences based on all the work we've been doing in social studies (i.e. family, fears, hopes and dreams, culture, etc.) and then students created abstract artwork for the background. We will finish putting these together next week. I won't be able to share our students' work on this because their faces will be in it but here's an example. If anyone is interested in volunteering next week to work with students to organize and glue down their sentences, please send me an email!

We also learned all about Lunar New Year this week! We enjoyed reading some stories and watching videos, and created a spinner to show all the zodiac animals. Since it's the year of the snake, we made some snake artwork as well!

We do mindfulness every day after lunch to get our brains and bodies ready for learning. Recently we enjoyed watching the Find Your Force series from Headspace and we started the Sesame Street series from them. We only made it to episode 3 so please don't watch ahead!
