Hello families,  Here's our weekly update!  This week students were working hard on a summative assessment for our patterns unit! Students had fun creating pattern art and used a checklist to make sure they were using specific types of patterns in their art. They also had a peer check their work to make sure they were including the correct patterns. On Monday, students planned their art, and on Tuesday they completed their art using crayons and watercolour paint. They look awesome!!  We worked on some skip counting a bit this week as well, including counting by 5s and 10s. This was pretty tricky for a lot of students and might be something we come back to after solidifying our understanding of place value. Here are the skip counting expectations for each grade:  Grade 1 1s to 100 starting at any number Backwards from 20 to 0 by 1s 5s to 100 starting at 0 10s to 100 starting at 0 2s to 20 starting at 0 Grade 2 1s to 1000, forwards and backwards starting at any number ...

Hello families,  Here's our weekly update!  In literacy, we reviewed the letters R with the characters Rosie Racoon and Rhino Ralph, and the letter L with characters Lonnie Lion and Lizzie Lamb. We also learned about r letter blends (gr, fr, cr, tr, etc.) We learned how to put words in alphabetical order and we learned about syllables. We talked about the clapping trick for finding syllables as well as counting how many times your chin drops when you say the word. Students were reminded that how many sounds or letters in a word is different than how many syllables are in a word. Now that we've learned many ways to practice our high-frequency words, students can use the choice board to decide how they would like to practice them each morning during Opening Task.  Here are the words for next week:  In small group work during during Daily LA, we've been talking about rhyming words and working with different word families. Students are practicing their decoding skills to...

We had another great week in room 11! Our first five day week of the year! Here's what we got up to!  We are continuing to practice our inside voices (close-talking voices). We enjoyed reading the story "My Mouth is a Volcano."    We also learned what it means to follow the "group plan." This  is a strategy from Occupational Therapists for students to understand and demonstrate expected behaviours. The program, Social Explorers, is designed to develop social thinking. Specifically, it develops awareness of self, awareness of others, and the impact of our actions on others' feelings and thoughts. The term Group Plan is the expected behaviours and routines. Students are learning how to identify the group plan and join in with their bodies and thinking.  In the mornings, students have been introduced to Opening Task. This is a short, familiar activity that students complete after soft entry. The activity may change depending on what we are learning in the class...
