November 28-December 2

Hello families,

We had an eventful week! We spent Tuesday and Wednesday on the stage while our classroom was being painted which was quite the adventure! We also had to spend most recesses inside due to the cold weather!

In math, we finally finished up our place value donuts. We also learned about representing smaller numbers with 10-frames. We took a look at the December calendar and students made their own to bring home to help them remember all of the things that are happening this month! On Friday, we enjoyed playing a holiday math game with our big buddy class.

In science, we wrapped up our learning about colour with the colour wheel and moved on to learning about liquids. Students shared what the already knew about liquids and examples of liquids (I had to laugh when the first idea shared was wine!) and learned about the different properties of water through exploration.

This week we have been slowly reading the story called "Sadly Ever After?" We are collaboratively making a chart and discussing how different emotions look and sound, and what they are used for. We will continue this week!

Word Work Groups

In Ms. Greenhall's Word Work Group students have been learning about consonants. This week we reviewed the letters C, H, F and D using the Animated Literacy actions. We then cut and sorted pictures that start with these letters. Ask your child about the actions and sounds for C, H, F and D.

In Ms. Lacour's Word Work Group students have been learning about vowels. This week we continued with short "A" and looked at the "AP" and "AG" word families. We then sorted pictures to match the corresponding words. Ask your child about words in the "AP" and "AG" family.

In Ms. Midgley's word work group we reviewed Sh and Ch. We sorted pictures that start with H, SH or CH. We have become masters of SH and CH! Next week we will be learning two new digraphs!

In Ms. Gierl & Ms. Green's groups, students continued their exploration of long and short A sounds with a focus on "a, a_e, ai and oddball words." Ask your child about how the letters e & i might change the short a sound to the long a sound!

In social studies, we came back to our medicine wheel. We had been focusing on the yellow section and learning more about ourselves and where we come from. We are now focusing on the red section of the medicine wheel which signifies the heart and belonging. The sacred medicine associated with this idea is cedar. We read a story called "Stand Like a Cedar" and made cedar prints with paint and cedar clippings that Ms. Greenhall shared with us. Students started brainstorming what cedar is used for, what it reminds them of, and how it makes them feel. We will finish up this activity on Monday.

Through this learning we continue to work on the following Social Studies outcomes:

Grade 1:
  • I can describe the connections we have to Indigenous and diverse cultures found in our communities.
  • I can explore ways in which Indigenous peoples and diverse cultural groups contributed to the origins and evolutions of our community over time
Grade 2:
  • I can describe how the presence of Indigenous origins is reflected in the community today
  • I can explore the cultural characteristics of Indigenous communities

In phys ed, we have been playing some different cooperative games. Students had fun collaboratively building snowmen!

Hermit Crabs

I am looking for someone to take care of our classroom hermit crabs over the winter break! They are really easy to take care of and can be left for a few days (2-3) if you are away for a little. This will be first come, first served! I will also be looking for someone over the march break and summer break. If no one is available to take the crabs, they can always come home with me so no pressure! Please send me an email if you're interested.
