Monday

Hello everyone.

I hope everyone had a restful weekend! I was telling students today that I slept until noon on Saturday! I am all rested up for the week ahead!

This morning we did our morning tub activities and did a sharing circle where students shared what they did over the weekend. I shared with them that when I visited the school yesterday, I found a fish from our fish tank on the floor (we're sharing our class pet with Miss Ireland's class). He had jumped out when no one was here and unfortunately didn't make it! I learned that sometimes fish do this when the ammonia level or pH balance is off or if the tank is not decorated enough or it doesn't have enough hiding spots. We had introduced new fish to the tank and we guess this guy just wasn't very happy about it!

We started learning about "Daily 5" literacy by doing "read to self." Next week we will be starting our real Daily 5 program where students will be divided into 5 groups and will complete a different activity each day. These activities include: read to self, buddy reading, word work, listen to reading and read with Ms. Midgley. Tomorrow we will practice buddy reading with the help of our big buddy class!

We had snack and then went outside for gym as our regular gym schedule will be starting tomorrow. Students will get 30 minutes of PE every day! During work period we did Morning Math and spelling. Each week there will be two spelling lists, blue and green, that students can choose from. At school we will practice the words each day with a different activity. I will include a picture to show you some of these activities! On Friday we will have a spelling quiz. The point of the spelling is not to get a perfect score on the quiz! It is to help students learn word families and spelling patterns. We had a lot of positive feedback from spelling last year and thought we would continue with it this year. This year we will not send a copy of the spelling words home in order to save paper, we will just be posting the words on the blog. You can practice them at home if you'd like but you don't need to! Practicing at home can be more than writing the words out; you could use play-doh, lego, leaves, or even your body to spell the words.

Blue List: at, mat, cat, rat, pat, hat, sat, fat
Green List: with, went, when, and, then, like, same, goes

In the afternoon we shared our memories from our memory bags. Thank you to everyone for helping your child get organized for this activity. I can tell that lots of students practiced talking about their memory. We then had a little more work time where most students were able to choose their work choice. After recess we started guest reader and our classroom jobs.

Here are a few updates/reminders!

Supervision
This year I am responsible for bus supervision after school. This means I need to head out to the front of the school quickly after the bell to help organize all the bus students. Students in room 13 have been reminded to find another adult if they need help after school or cannot find the person who is picking them up. If you are trying to find me after school that is where I will be Tuesday-Friday. Please feel free to send an email or call the school if you were hoping to catch me but were unable to.

Nuts
Please remember that our school is a "nut aware environment." We cannot guarantee that nuts will not be in the school but are asking that nut-free lunches are sent. Please remind your child not to share snacks at school just in case of allergies. We do have nut allergies in our classroom this year.

Please return these envelopes by Monday, September 17th!

I think I am forgetting something.... Mondays....
