Hello families!  I can't believe we're in the single digit-countdown for weeks of school left - only 9 and we have a lot to learn still!  This week in math, students were really excited to start learning about fractions. Fractions are a new concept for grade 1 and 2 students as it was not taught until grade 3 in the old curriculum. If students in grade 1 are showing a strong understanding of halfs, they will have the opportunity to explore fractions further alongside the grade 2s! This week we started with a pre-assessment and learned about equal and unequal parts. Students then began learning about numerators and denominators - they are really excited about this new concept! They were even chanting about fractions!  Grade 1 Grade 2 Fraction Work Choice Fraction Skittles Fraction Circles During our morning task, students have also been working on addition and subtraction word problems! We've been pulling out key vocabulary that helps us to determine if a word problem is as

Hello families,  This week we had to say "See you later!" to Mrs. Carreno. It has been so wonderful having her in our classroom this year but we are very excited for her to be finished school and entering the world of teaching! We hope to see her around LBS in May as a guest teacher! Thank you for everything Mrs. Carreno!! Since Mrs. Carreno helped us so much with our Best Part of Me writing in the winter, we decided to make her a book called "The Best Parts of Mrs. Carreno" and each student made a page.  This week in math, students learned about the near doubles strategy for addition. Throughout the week we played doubles Jeopardy! Students also reviewed fact families in their morning tasks and learned how to model subtraction on a number line.  Students enjoyed working with our artist in residence, Ms. Sharon. We students used plastic to make some rubbings with water colour crayons. Next week we will work with her again! Each class is creating art based on pattern

Hello families,  We've had a busy week full of fun and learning!  Students have been enjoying continuing to learn about nutrition and exploring different mystery foods. This week students tried hard boiled eggs and milk! They were very excited about their "mini cups." After trying the food, students wrote about the food using their five senses. This week students started the planning process for their snack writing. They enjoyed eating and describing some of their favourite snacks using a graphic organizer!  In math this week, we continued learning about subtraction. Grade 1s are working on subtraction within 20 and grade 2s are working on subtraction to 100. This week they learned the stacking method to subtract - working with the ones before moving on to the tens. Students enjoyed using the Montessori Bead Bars and Golden Beads as well as the Stamp Game to concretely solve subtraction problems.  On Friday, grade 1 students learned about fact families and the relationsh

Hello families,  Happy Easter! I hope you all have a nice time visiting with family this weekend! 🐣 I can't believe there are less than three months left of the school year - this year is flying by! Here are some highlights from this week!  This week students were excited to start gymnastics in PE! I am not a gymnastics instructor and our gymnastics at school is different than gymnastics lessons outside of school. Students will not be learning somersaults, cartwheels, headstands, etc. This week we learned about safety including our head to toe check, how to move around the gym safely, and safety landings. We worked with the mats this week and learned some different types of balances, jumps, and ways to travel.  Gymnastics!! We will begin gymnastics in our regularly scheduled gym classes on Monday, April 3rd .   The gymnastics unit will last until Thursday, May 4th .  Safety routines, cooperation and sportsmanship are taught and reviewed in each class.       This physical activity
