Hello families,  Last week we reviewed the letter I. Vowels typically tend to be the trickiest letters for students so we only did one letter for the week. This week we will be reviewing the letters W and V.  We have been busy working on some literacy and numeracy assessments that were provided by the government in order to determine gaps in students learning with the pandemic. The students have been quite receptive and seem to actually be enjoying them a bit. Last week we also learned about addition and began discussing some addition strategies. We will be continuing with this work after the break. We are continuing to explore different 2D shapes and where we find them in our environment.  In science, we have been exploring the question: How do animals survive winter? We discussed the needs of humans, animals and plants and how our human needs change in the winter time. We then began learning about some of the animals that hibernate in the winter. I'm hoping to talk more about hib

Hello families,  I hope you're all doing well! It was definitely a bit of a crazy week around here. As I'm sure you heard, I was away sick on Tuesday and Wednesday and with no substitute teachers available the students had the opportunity to work with Ms. Durnford, Ms. Rooke and Ms. Brown! So, my update will be a bit short this week! Can you believe there are only 10 days of school left before the winter break?  In literacy, we have been reviewing the letters L and N. We only have a couple of letters left! We also started making a 12 Days of Christmas book and each day students are adding a page. They will bring them home before the break.  In math we have continued to work with numbers to 20 and 2D shapes. This week students worked on some shape artwork and learned about pentagons.  In gym, we have been having "Fitness Fridays" and the students have enjoyed starting our PE class with a Tabata workout (20 seconds of exercise, and 10 seconds of rest). We have also been

Hello families!  This week we started learning about Remembrance Day. We had some great discussions and watched some videos together. We also learned about artist Georgia O'Keeffe and created some poppy artwork inspired by her poppy paintings. The other grade 1 classes also did some poppy artwork!  We reviewed the letters 'F' and 'B' this week with Farley Fox and Baby Barnaby. We also focused on "sky, grass, dirt" letters and using "spaghetti and meatball" spaces in our writing.  In math, we focused on the numbers 13 and 14. We also learned a couple of math games including "Chips in Jeopardy" and "All Aboard!" These games are from Math Mania, which also has some great resources to use at home -  https://www.mmmathmania.com/copy-of-for-educators  We've been playing a lot of games as teacher vs class to learn them, and then students are welcome to use these games as "responsible work choices" when their class work

Literacy This week we reviewed the letters J and K. Students wrote about their weekends. This week we are going to focus on legibility and spaces. We read lots of Halloween stories and re-visited the Junie B. Jones book that we stopped reading for awhile.  One of the books we read this week was The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin. This story is mostly about accepting others even if they are different. We also watched the movie in three sections and students drew about what happened at the beginning and middle of the story. This week we will finish this activity and do some comparing between the book and movie. Math Students enjoyed playing Spider Legs this week with a partner! We all worked together to count up the pumpkin seeds in each of our pumpkins by making groups of 10 and skip counting. Students also practiced their tally marks and graphing when we collected data about who liked and did not like the pumpkin seeds.  Science Students had fun learning a little bit about what

Veterans Food Drive

Veterans Food Drive Dear Parents and Guardians,  The Grade 6 Students in Action Club have organized and will be running a food drive starting on   November 1st and ending on November 16th.  The collected food will be going to the Veterans Food Bank, as Remembrance Day is coming up and we would like to show our appreciation for our Veterans.  This also connects to our learning in preparing for the upcoming Remembrance Day assembly that Room 7 and Room 8 will be hosting.  Please bring non-perishable food items such as: soup, pasta, baby food, cereal, peanut butter, protein or granola bars, trail mix and canned goods like fish or vegetables. Any other non-perishable items that you think of are welcomed to be donated. Don’t forget to try and bring some gluten free or nut free items in case of anyone with allergies. Hello families!  We had another busy week together!  Literacy This week we reviewed the letter 'R' with the character Rosie Raccoon. The letter "R" sound is a very tough one! If your child is having trouble with the pronunciation, please keep in mind that children often don't develop this sound until 7 or older. We also reviewed the letter "H" with the character Hippy Hippo.  Students also did some writing and drawing to help me think of a Halloween costume for this year! Here are a few! Some of the writing was copied from a whiteboard and some was sounded out with support or independently. Math We have been focusing in on our teen numbers. This week we looked at the numbers 11 and 12. Students built the numbers using the Montessori Bead Bars, stamped the numbers, coloured the correct quantity and came up with different addition questions to make the numbers. Students were provided with three different options and could choose the difficulty level that b

Hello families!  I apologize for the late blog post. I ran out of time on Friday afternoon and left my laptop charger at school all weekend... oops!  Literacy This week we reviewed the letters T with our characters Timmy Tiger and Terrible Tommy T Rex, and the letter S with Sadie Seal. We continue with Daily 5 literacy time each day, and tried some writing about our weekends.  Math In math, we reviewed the number 10 and started looking at our teen numbers. I gave students a little pre-assessment to see if they were able to count and identify quantities from 10-20, and draw these quantities using a tens frame. We will be continuing to work with our teen numbers next week!  Science Last week we briefly talked about opaque, translucent and transparent. Students drew three pictures and covered each with a different type of material. We also watched this video to review this concept.  The Great Lessons We continued with two more demonstrations from the first Montessori Great Lesson. We disc
