Hello families,  Here's our weekly update! I'll keep it pretty minimal so I don't spoil any of the work that will be shared at conferences next week.  Math This week students had the opportunity to show what they learned in terms of recalling math facts and representing addition in a variety of ways. They will be sharing this work at conferences! We also enjoyed math groups this week and learned/reviewed some of our Montessori materials that are great for addition! On Friday we played a fun addition St. Patrick's Day game!  Montessori Stamp Game (has nothing to do with stamps and is not a game, but a math tool!) Montessori Addition Strip Board (For adding to 18) Literacy We continued talking about the bossy e and reviewed the "_ce" sound. We also learned that "_ge" makes the 'j' sound (i.e. page, huge, stage, etc.) We talked about the exceptions to these rules - English is tricky! Some exceptions would include: have, give, love, dove, solve,

Hello families,  Here's our weekly update! In the coming weeks I may be sharing a little less as we get closer to student-led conferences!  Math In math we've been continuing to develop our fact fluency and exploring different ways to represent addition. Students worked on a big addition chart to show equations in different ways. I then used this activity to figure out which way each student needed to practice the most for our next lesson. Grade 2s learned how to add using expanded form and practiced fact families and grade 1s learned to represent addition using ten frames. Grade 1s will learn more about fact families when we have a better understanding of subtraction. Both grade 1 and 2 explored how number bonds are connected to addition!  Grade 1 Example Grade 2 Example Grade 2 Example Literacy This week we learned about the long U sound with the bossy e (u_e). Sometimes this makes a "oo" sound like in 'flute' and sometimes is says "yu" like un

Hello Families, Here's our weekly update! We had to switch up our plans for this week with so many absences - there were lots of activities I didn't want so many students to miss!  Science We had a great time at Fish Creek on Thursday! We were on the hunt for signs of animals and signs of positive and negative human interaction with the park. The students were excited to see lots of red squirrels and black-capped chickadees.  Checking out the creek! Animal Evidence (Dogs?) Negative human interaction - bird feed Animal evidence - Red squirrel drey (nest) More Red Squirrel dreys- in the same tree which is unusual! Fungus on a Choke Cherry Tree Animal Evidence - Beetles! Animal Evidence - Red Squirrels (shells from pinecones) Animal Scat - we thought deer or hare Animal Evidence - Woodpeckers! I'm going to share my Google Slides about animal adaptations so if you're child missed an animal and they'd like to learn about them at home, they can!  Animal Adaptations -  htt
