Hello families!  Since we have to keep up to date with our classroom blogs and Google Classroom this year, I have decided that I will post on Google Classroom throughout the week and will post a blog at the end of each week. Otherwise, I just don't think I could keep up! Make sure to check out our Google Classroom for more frequent updates.  Here are a few highlights from this week!  For starters, our newest hermit crab is so much more active and friendly than the others. Over the spring/summer we unfortunately lost one of our three hermit crabs, but the family who took care of them for me replaced him with this friendly guy! (Or girl?) The students are really enjoying getting to see him move around more and eat. Hermit crabs are nocturnal so this is kind of a special treat! This week we reviewed the letters H, Ar, J, and S. All of the characters are posted on our Google Classroom under "Animated Literacy." Students also enjoyed reading "The OK Book" and each st

Terry Fox Run

Terry Fox Run 2020   We will be having our Annual Terry Fox Run on  Thursday, September 24, 2020 . This year the Terry Fox Run is celebrating its 40 th  anniversary! Teachers will be discussing with students the life of Terry Fox and the contributions he has made to cancer research.    Students can dedicate their run to someone who they know that has been affected by cancer. Please speak to your child prior to our run and if they choose to dedicate their run to  someone  they can share this in their class' sharing circle prior to or after their run.   Should you wish to  make a donation  online, please use the following link to donate through the Terry Fox website:     https://secure.terryfox.ca/registrant/TeamFundraisingPage.aspx?TeamID=918010   Let’s keep Terry’s dream to find a cure for cancer alive!

Happy Friday! (Sept. 17-18)

Hello families & happy Friday!  Thursday was a very busy day! We had our first virtual assembly and our first fire drill! We read a story called "Pass it On" about small acts of kindness and we learned to draw an otter using Kids Art Hub . We also reviewed the letter T with Timmy Tiger and Terrible Tommy T-Rex.  Today, we reviewed the letter R with the characters Rosie Raccoon and Rhino Ralph. Students also continued with their daily "morning math" practice, as we do every day. Today we also watched a Wild Kratts episode about sea otters. After watching students completed a writing prompt about what they know about sea otters. Grade 1 students used a template and grade 2 students copied the sentence starters from the board. We also enjoyed some time playing outside!  Missing Sweater One of our students is missing his blue hoodie. We can't seem to find it in the classroom or school anywhere. If you're child accidentally brought it home, please let me kno

Hello families!  This week we have been focusing on the idea of kindness. Yesterday, students listened to a story called "Do Unto Otters" and they discussed how classmates should treat each other. They did some writing/otter art.  Here are a few samples! Today we also read a story called "What Does it Mean to be Kind?" and further discussed ways to show kindness. Students completed some writing using the sentence starter, "One thing I can do for others is..." We will continue to work on more otter and kindness related activities this week.  Earlier this week, students worked on a weekend journal where they wrote about what they did over the weekend. I like to use this task at the beginning of each week as it is predictable for students and having a familiar writing task to help them feel more comfortable with writing and taking risks!  In addition to reviewing the letters P, U, O, and M, we have now reviewed X, A, and D. Our characters for these letters a

Weekly Update

Image
Hello families!  I'm not sure if I will continue using this blog format for the rest of the year, but for now I think this is a pretty good place to keep you updated on how things are going in the classroom. I will also get a Google Classroom set up soon for you to access should your child miss school.  We have been having a great week! We started a daily work activity called "Morning Math" where students are given a number and they represent it in different ways to build their number sense. They determine what one more, one less, 10 more, the next 5 numbers, as well as whether the number is even or odd and drawing a representation of the number.  Throughout the week we have also been doing letter review with a program called Animated Literacy. We have been reviewing a letter each day. I really like this program because it provides a character, action, story and song for each letter. So far, we have learned about P olly P anda, U ncle U pton, Dr. O llie O strich, and M i
