Friday

Hello families & happy Friday! Today we had a short work period where students practiced their weekly words and then chose a work choice. We had our short Friday gym time where we played a game and did some fitness circuits. We then spent some time with our grade 3/4 buddy class. Students worked with their buddies to create a Venn diagram to compare themselves with their buddy and got to know their buddies better! We then had another snack break and students had an extra music class today! I am planning on changing up the classroom layout a little bit today after school. I gave students a heads up so they aren't too thrown off on Monday morning! Can you believe there are only 14 school days left before Christmas?! (But who's counting...) I'm still looking for volunteers for our AARCS fundraiser - please let me know if you're available to help out on Dec. 10th or 11th! 😊 Have a wonderful weekend!

Hello families!  This morning, we had some work time to practice our weekly words and continue with our math from yesterday. After gym, we had a new Museo-Kit. I didn't tell students what these objects were from - only that they are all from the same place and were not used in a school. We will spend more time with this Museo-Kit next week. In the afternoon, we had Daily 5 literacy and we read a story called "Harold & Hog Pretend For Real!" We enjoyed this silly story and practiced summarizing it using the "somebody-wanted-but-so-then" formula. I also noticed a big improvement in how students were treating each other today!  A parent shared this link with me today that I wanted to pass on for anyone who might be interested in reading to animals! How sweet!  Please send me an email if you're interested in helping out with our AARCS fundraiser! (Please see yesterday's blog for more info!

Hello families, This morning we practiced our Weekly Words from the "-ip" family. Students then went to music and then we had gym. During work time, students worked with partner to re-attempt the math spending task. This time, students had $19 to spend at the grocery store. I gave students an example, using the mall problem, to show them different ways that they could show their work. I also gave them half a piece of chart paper so they could have more space to show their work. Learning to organize your work and explain your thinking is very tricky! We discussed using pictures, numbers AND words to clearly show how we solved the problem. Practice makes perfect! There are so many ways to approach this problem: What could I buy so that I spend all of my money? What is the closest I can get to $19 without going over budget? What are the healthiest options I could buy? What are the least amount of items I could buy? What are the most amount of items I could buy?

Hello families! This morning we had some more time with the One Room Schoolhouse Mueso-Kit. We took a look at some of the photos and discussed how school was different and the same 100 years ago. We also read a story on Epic about school 100 years ago. During work time, students practiced their "-ip" words and worked on an activity to compare school today vs. school 100 years ago. Students could choose to split their page in half and draw pictures and/or write about each, or they could create a Venn Diagram to compare. In the afternoon, we had Daily 5 and library.  Tomorrow we are going to try another math problem similar to the shopping task we worked on last week and we will be talking about summarizing stories.  Parent Resources I decided to create a Google Drive folder to share some resources that you can use at home. Since the blog is public, I didn't want to leave the folder open to the public as well. If you would like to access

Hello families! This morning we had a great time learning how to do wet art felting. Thanks so much to the volunteers who were able to join us. Here are some photos of the process we went through to make wet art felt Christmas ornaments. Art took up most of our morning, and with the remaining time, we worked as a class to brainstorm words from the "-ip" family and students chose 5-8 words. I asked them to use their best writing and to pay attention to their "sky, grass, dirt letters" so you are able to read them at home! In the afternoon we had Mindful Minutes, did our classroom jobs and had Guest Reader. In gym, we played "Cheese Movers," and at the end of the day, students went to music. Here is the schedule for Guest Reader in December! Guest Reader is not mandatory so if your child is not on the schedule, they decided to opt out for December. I also shared it on Seesaw to make sure everyone got it. Tomorrow we will

Hello families! Today we finished up our seasonal art and did some writing about the objects in our "Museo-kit." Students chose one thing to write about and described what they thought it was used for and why. In the afternoon, students used gloves to check out the items and made their final guesses - they did a pretty good job. In case you're interested, here is what each item was used for! 1. Handbell - used for recess and dismissal 2. Lunch-kit - would have been used for something else in the home and then cleaned and re-used for lunch 3. Strap  - used for discipline - students would be hit on the palm of their hand when misbehaving 4. Inkwell - these fit into a hole in the desk and was used for writing 5. Math text book - used for grade 4 and 5 6. Story book - written in 1928!! 7.  Straight pen  - was dipped into the inkwell for writing 8. Slate - used with chalk to practice math and letters Art Felt Studios On Monday morning we will be visited b

Hello families, Today, some students started working on their art right away. We used water colours for this project and the work will be displayed outside of Mrs. Ireland's room during this week's conferences. If students used their Explore and Play time to do their art, they were given some time during work period instead. Students also had music and gym this morning. In the afternoon, we skipped Mindful Minutes and Daily 5 in order to spend more time with our Glenbow Museum "Museo-kit." There were 8 artifacts that I set out on the table and students sketched 4 or more and guessed what they were. We discussed why we cannot touch the items without gloves and I was strict about no second chances if students were touching! Luckily, everyone was able to treat the objects respectfully and pretend we were in a museum! I only told students that the artifacts were from a long time ago and were all used at the same place. After they sketched and guessed the objects, I le
