Social Skills & Orange Shirt Day

Image
Yesterday we focused on the idea of having a peaceful classroom and that we can't control what other people say and do, we can only control how we react to it. So when someone is unkind to us, that does not mean we should be unkind back. We read a story called "Peace Week in Miss Fox's Class" and students have been eager to also have "peace week" in our classroom.  Today our principal, Ms. Rooke, came to visit our classroom and read some more stories with the students. She read "David Goes to School" and discussed personal responsibility with students. In other words, remembering only to worry about ourselves and our own actions, and letting Ms. Midgley handle the rest! She also read a story called "You Hold Me Up" and we thought of ways that we can hold each other up when we're at school.  Today we also started talking about Orange Shirt Day and Residential Schools. I was impressed with how much students already knew about this topic

Virtual Open House

What an amazing school year start-up we have been having at LBS! Typically, at this time of year, we host Parent Teacher Conferences in an Open House format. With restrictions due to Covid-19, our format has been adjusted. This year, each class has created a video to introduce families to our school, answer commonly asked questions and show details of how our class works. These videos will be released on Thursday, September 23, 2021 at 4:00 pm. If you have questions after viewing the video, please reach out. We are certainly missing seeing families in our school building and look forward to future opportunities where this may be possible. There will be more formal Parent-Teacher Conferences on the evening of November 25th and the morning of November 26th.

Hello families!  We had a great week in grade 1! I know the transition from kindergarten to grade 1 is pretty big - there are a lot of new rules and routines to learn and we are getting there!  Literacy This week we started reviewing letters and sounds. We are aiming to review 2 letters every week but only did one this week. We may spend longer on vowels as they seem to be trickier for students. We started with the letter 'P' and have been using a program called Animated Literacy. I really like this program because each letter has a character, story and action. We practiced making the letter P with materials and did some printing practice with uppercase and lowercase Ps. Students were given a picture of the character, Polly Panda, to bring home to share with you.  This week we also tried doing some "free write" where students could write about whatever they wanted. They included a coloured picture. I wanted to see what students were able to write - some wrote sentence
